We are looking for aBreeding Specialist - Melon to join our Agricultural Solutions team based in Acampo, CA.

As a Breeding Specialist - Melon, you will assist the Breeder in the development of a commercial melon pipeline and all aspects of the melon breeding program, with the objective of developing superior varieties that exhibit enhanced input and output traits.

As a Breeding Specialist - Melon, you create chemistry by...

  • Assisting and supporting the Breeder in all breeding activities, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Maintaining the breeding database according to program and company policies, ensuring the collection and organization of quality data from trials.

  • Organizing, managing, and maintaining an updated seed inventory, and coordinating with the Farm team to ensure clean production of transplants and seeds.

  • Supervising technicians, seasonal, and contract laborers, and designing, planning, and implementing breeding trials after approval from the Breeder, in cooperation with Screening Specialists and Marketing & Sales.

  • Adhering to the company’s approved SOPs, safety, and stewardship policies in all tasks.

  • Performing various other duties as assigned to meet business objectives.

If you...

  • Possess a MS in horticulture, plant breeding, genetics, or a closely related field and no previous work experience OR a BS in horticulture, plant breeding, genetics, or a closely related field and have 1 or more years of experience in plant breeding or a related discipline.

  • Previous experience with molecular breeding tools and field experience are a plus.

  • Have working knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures, genetics and plant breeding, and familiarity with experimental design and statistical analysis.

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with the demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.

  • Manage complexity by acquiring data from multiple and diverse sources when solving problems; evaluate pros and cons, risks, and benefits of different solutions/options.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a variety of vehicles, trucks, and field management machines, etc.

  • Have computer skills related to data management (data collection, uploading, and processing); proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Language skills: English required, bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%, domestically, at times with short notice, and internationally.

Pay transparency

BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive Pay Range for this role is $62,400 - $85,800. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
