What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Inertial Sensors Department. You will support Sandia’s advanced MEMS sensor technology development by working on both fundamental research topics in MEMS design, fabrication, and testing, and applying these learnings to real sensor applications having consequence in national security applications.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Team closely with internal and external expertise for fundamental research related to inertial sensor materials, fabrication, integration, device characterization and testing of inertial sensors.
Coordination and execution of experiments that are used to validate electrical and mechanical models
Active participation in analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on characterization, experimental, and modeling data
Use Sandia’s internal facilities including the MESA Fabs, MEMS environmental test labs, post-fab packaging resources, as well as failure analysis characterization.
Actively publish and present research to the broader scientific community
Present technical content and results internally within the team as well as, externally to partners, customers, and management.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering conferred within five (5) years prior to employment
Experience with MEMS fabrication working with sensors
Experience with semiconductor techniques and process integration
Experience in electrical circuits and mechanical engineering principles
Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Experience with:
SPICE and/or CAD tools
MATLAB
Test data analysis
Academic or professional experience in inertial sensors
Ability to conceive and propose ideas for process improvement through troubleshooting
Strong oral, written, interpersonal and organization skills, including the ability to collaborate well in a diverse team environment and develop positive relationships
Experience performing original research, as demonstrated by a record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals

The Inertial Sensors Department, 5216, performs state-of-the-art design, fabrication, and testing of MEMS based sensor technologies for national security applications. The team partners closely with Sandia’s Microelectronics Engineering Science Applications (MESA) center with internal facilities and competency in microelectronics design, fabrication, and testing. Our team is a fun, engaging group with a strong sense of comradery! NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information:
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
