Athens State University Chemical Hygiene Officer, Part-time in Athens, Alabama

JOB SUMMARY:

Provide oversight to the university main campus, the Alabama Center for the Arts, and ASIM/AMSTI associated with environmental and chemical safety regulations and enforcement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knowing the current legal requirements concerning regulated substances, both in handling/disposal of reagents/chemicals and adopting/following the requirements of relevant governing bodies, including the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Relevant yearly trainings may include HAZWoper, HAZcom, and OSHA, or their equivalents, as necessary.

Maintain a regular and routine presence at the Alabama Center for the Arts such that ongoing chemical/environmental oversight as well as collaboration with arts faculty on the safety of all lab and workspaces is easily observed, assessed, and reported.

Establish and provide ongoing guidance for protocols and best practices for chemical/environmental safety in all facilities, including the Alabama Center for the Arts, AMSTI, and the main campus.

Serve on the University Risk Management and Safety Committee.

Aid in the development, maintenance, implementation, and enforcement of Risk Management and Environmental Safety Policies, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Conduct yearly inspections of university buildings for potential risks and hazards and take steps to minimize risks and reduce hazards where possible.

Developing and implementing a schedule for regular formal housekeeping inspections of the laboratory facilities, including inspections of emergency equipment.

Submit yearly inspections to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs as well as report violations that require interdepartmental cooperation to solve.

Ensure that the university follows all national, state, and local safety regulations related to chemical and environmental safety.

Maintain employee exposure records.

Develop and provide CHP safety training to new personnel, including those working in lab and facilities positions.

Maintain a list of CHP trained individuals allowed level lab access.

Maintaining the university's Chemical Satellite Accumulation Site (SAA), including the storage and proper disposal of chemicals from main campus and ASIM/AMSTI.

Posting and making available contact information in the event of an emergency.
