About this position:

To assist professional surveyors and/or higher level technicians in the performance of field survey work in Location and Survey. For more information about structured training requirements, refer to the Department's Structured Training Policy. In performing his duties, incumbent often works under very hazardous conditions as surveys are conducted near vehicular traffic, hilly or swampy terrain, etc. Each member of the crew is required to adhere to strict safety standards and the wearing of special safety attire. See the Examples of Work below for the complete job duties.

This position requires statewide travel each week that involves overnight stays Monday through Thursday.

This position is eligible for $2.00/hour premium pay for hours actually worked.

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics. All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.

Full-time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.

Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical will substitute for two years of the required experience.

A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Engineering Technician 5 by the lack of lead worker responsibilities or performance of advanced journeyman - complex duties requiring intensive training and diversified experience in a specialized area or by lack of responsibility for serving as a direct line supervisor over one or two subordinates under circumstances as defined in the applicable Allocation Criteria memo.

Examples of Work

FUNCTION:

To assist professional surveyors and/or higher level technicians in the performance of field survey work in Location and Survey. Engineering Technician positions are in a training series capped at Engineering Technician 4. The required minimum number of years of experience, completion of required structured training courses as well as satisfactory work performance is required for incumbents to progress through the training series. For more information about the minimum qualifications for each level in the series, refer to the Civil Service Job Specifications. For more information about structured training requirements, refer to the Department's Structured Training Policy. JOB DUTIES:

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.

70% Utilizes a thorough knowledge and understanding of Department procedures, policies, standards and specifications in the course of assisting in the electronic collection and processing of field survey data required as a basis for the design of roadway and bridge projects. These activities include control surveying, hydrographic surveying, topographic surveying and boundary surveying. Applies DOTD surveying and engineering policies and procedures to normal work situations in the field and while utilizing computer software to edit the electronic survey data to ensure both quality and quantity of data provided.

10% Assists in properly maintaining all associated surveying equipment necessary for accurate data collection. This includes periodically verifying the correctness of all measuring devices including electronic distance and angular measuring devices (total stations), vertical measuring devices (levels), electronic data collectors, water depth and bottom profiling devices (fathometers), global positioning system (GPS) receivers, and all other associated peripheral equipment and instruments.

10% Completes required training classes and receives on-the-job training in performing all phases of electronic survey data collection and the development and use of computer generated digital terrain models (DTM). May also provide on-the-job training or assistance to newer or lower level technicians and/or consultant personnel.

5% May perform additional duties as necessary to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of the Location and Survey section.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
