This is a Journeyman position in our HVAC department. This position requires basic skills in the maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration equipment including preventative maintenance duties.

Job Duties:

30%- Performs preventative maintenance duties such as add coolant, change & adjust belts, change air filters and service equipment with lubricants and chemicals.

30%- This position requires working independently with minimal supervision to investigate make general repairs to buildings' air conditioning/heating systems and other related mechanical equipment such as freezers, fans, etc.

10%- Recharges air conditioning system with proper amount of lubricant and refrigerant.

10%- Installs, replaces, adjusts and calibrates major components of refrigeration units: compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service values, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies.

10%- Overhauls and repairs pumps, motors, control systems, piping and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems.

5%- Works along side of other advance journeyman to troubleshoot and repair control systems.

5%- Performs other duties as assigned by the Department including on-call and emergency work when required.

Special or Physical Qualifications:

Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.

In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of an emergency or closure.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs, be capable of stooping, kneeling, or crouching; able to reach and/or climb a ladder, climb stairs, and bend their back. Due to the position's physical requirements, a pre-employment physical examination will be required per FASOP: HR-04.

Valid Driver's License

EPA Certification- EPA Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification (Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990)

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in the installation and/or maintenance of heating, ventilating, or air conditioning systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in the installation, operation or maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration systems will substitute for the two years of required experience on a month for month basis.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

As of November 14, 1994, employees must possess the appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

To provide skilled installation, maintenance, and repair on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units in large office buildings, hospitals, and multi-building complexes.

General from a HVAC/Refrigeration Foreman or maintenance supervisor of higher grade.

Supervision Exercised:

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Trades Apprentice by presence of journeyman level duties.

Differs from HVAC/Refrigeration Master Mechanic by lack of responsibility for major overhaul and modification of complex large tonnage, high horsepower centrifugal chillers, and other advanced HVAC/Refrigeration systems.

Examples of Work

Repairs and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment in buildings or complexes requiring total HVAC capacity of 20 tons or more.

Performs preventive maintenance duties on motors: adding coolant, adjusting controls, changing filters, etc.

Recharges air conditioning systems with proper amount of lubricant or refrigerant.

Overhauls and repairs pumps, motors, control systems, piping, and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems.

Reports temperatures produced by machines and makes necessary adjustments to produce desired temperatures.

Installs, replaces, adjusts, and calibrates major components of refrigeration units: compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.

Maintains records, log sheets, inventory, etc.

Services equipment with lubricants and chemicals.
