General Definition of Work

Responsible for maintaining and cleanliness and safety of parks and recreation facilities reserved for public use. Duties include grass mowing, tree and bush trimming, debris collection and disposal; general facility maintenance.

General knowledge of repair and operation of mowers and other outdoor maintenance equipment; knowledge of planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, grass, flower gardens as well as recreational equipment; ability to take and apply work direction.

Essential Functions

• Assumes secondary responsibility for general work orders, as needed, in County facilities.
• Mows grass, digs trenches, and other equipment operation tasks.
• Performs other related work as required including yard maintenance, storm clean up including the removal of snow and other tasks as needed to assist the department in completing assigned duties. Should have the ability to work after-hours or on-call as needed by Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in the grounds maintenance.
• Working knowledge of the work hazards, related liabilities, and applicable safety standards (Occupational Safety and Health Act) and County standards.
• Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools, tractors, riding mowers, etc.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
• Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities.

Education and Experience

Graduation from High School and two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping and maintenance work. Possession of a valid North Carolina Drivers License. Forklift experience a plus. Ability to meet all safety requirements and trainings in relation to the policies in place by Pamlico County.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and motor vehicles, to prepare written records and operate computer.
• Required to work outside through all seasons and weather conditions, heavy lifting, working on steep slopes, and use of different tools. This job may handle pesticides, fertilizers and cleaners.
