POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY:
The SQL DBA develops, supports, and maintains the database platforms for Ada County. The SQL DBA assists in building and maintaining documentation including policies, standards, data classification and guidelines to cost effectively develop and manage all databases, regardless of its connectivity to various applications and platforms. The incumbent ensures best performance of the databases, including proper backups and restores, administer necessary upgrades and enhancements, and follow guidelines and procedures for maintaining server confidentiality, security, integrity and availability of the data assets. The SQL DBA acts as a technical project leader on assigned projects and provide assistance to project teams with technical issues in the initiation, planning, and testing phases, and roll-out of infrastructure projects. The SQL DBA provides oversight, training, and guidance to Systems Administrators and Data Analysts focused on delivering the above.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The SQL DBA I assignments are well defined and of limited scope and technical complexity, using standard procedures and techniques. Guidance is readily available from other team members or management. Schedules, milestones, and priorities are usually provided by management.
The SQL DBA II assignments are less well defined and of moderate scope and technical complexity, where technical supervision provides an outline of the tasks to be performed and suggestions as to methods of approach and procedure to be followed. Guidance is readily available from other team members or management. Consults with team leader and/or management to develop schedules, milestones, and priorities.
Essential Functions
SQL DBA I
Develop database architectures and designs to enhance existing operational database environments, new projects and initiatives;
Monitor database activity and system usage, ensuring necessary resources are present to ensure databases function properly;
Refine physical design of databases to meet storage requirements, or makes recommendations for upgrading storage based on projected DB growth;
Analyze and determine informational needs, data relationships, proposed manipulation, data flow, and data output for complex databases;
Develop complex data retrieval queries and optimizing data queries within programs for performance and maintainability;
Monitor SQL, DB2 and Oracle Server security and managing both front end and back-end access to all databases;
Determine tests to use and collecting appropriate data;
Provide coding guidance, review and optimization of SQL Server SSIS packages, and related application programming interfaces;
Provide full support of SQL Server SSRS;
Provide support of maintenance plans (including DBCC), backup, recovery, and refresh of development SQL Server databases;
Plan/advise/validate all database installations, patches and upgrades;
Design indexes for existing applications, choosing when to add or remove indexes;
Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms;
As new systems are brought in-house, choose whether to use clustering, log shipping, mirroring, Windows Azure, or other technologies;
Install and configure new SQL Servers;
Provide extended hours of support for application development of database systems when required.
SQL DBA II
In addition to the above;
Research various hardware and software products; recommend solutions and implement approved products;
Work closely with management to develop the County's database security plan;
Document the company's database environment;
Perform complex technical, analytical and professional services involving program/member services, evaluation, database-driven Web sites, office operations;
Maintain and administer web server and middleware tools;
Audit, modify, and amend data in systems using SQL commands, hand-editing, and bulk import;
Troubleshoot and correct issues as they arise;
Add new users to the system as needed;
Enhance or build database designs;
Ensure database security, optimum performance of databases, backup & recovery, and disaster recovery;
May require supervision of SQL DBA I;
Understand and implement Business Intelligence (BI) features of SQL Server.

Job Requirements
SQL DBA I
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
A minimum of one to two years of experience in SQL database administration planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, and security management required; and related certifications;
Experience building and maintaining a clustered, high availability MS SQL and DB2 environment required;
Experience level T-SQL Development and Tuning skills;
Ability to program in SQL;
Experience with computational thinking and some database principles;
Excellent organizational and project management skills including ability to organize time and work on multiple tasks and follow through to completion of tasks or projects;
Ability to create and write clear, complete documentation of systems and procedures;
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including high degree of attention to detail and accuracy;
Knowledge of Replication Technologies (transactional, merge) in a production environment;
Experience with dimensional and relational modeling;
Working knowledge of SAN concepts and physical array design;
Applied knowledge of Microsoft Security/Authentication Concepts (Active Directory, IIS, Windows OS);
Knowledge of industry best practices;
Flexibility to participate in on-call rotation;
Ability to work with cross-functional project teams across multiple locations;
Ability to work independently.
SQL DBA II
In addition to the above;
A minimum of five years of experience in SQL database administration planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, and security management required; and related certifications;
Experience with MOF and MSF process frameworks a plus;
Experience with Performance Point Server or ProClarity tools a plus;
Established understanding of Infrastructure and relative technologies;
Established understanding of network connectivity and protocols;
Experience with Windows Server operating systems or Linux/UNIX operating systems is required;
Thorough understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices;
Exposure to other database platforms such as DB2, Sybase, MySQL, postgreSQL, SQL server.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license;
Must pass a criminal background investigation;
Must treat coworkers, users and the public with the utmost respect and regard for good public relations;
Working hours are generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but may vary with the needs of the County and may include evening or weekend work in the event of serious systems problems.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks.
