The Staff Accountant I will be responsible for:

  • Assists and provides support in the preparation of a variety of recurring financial transactions, reports, and analyses related to the hospital operating financial statement, intercompany activity, and other sub ledger activity and schedules.

  • Performs detailed analyses of various general ledger accounts and selected cost centers, as assigned. Reviews activity for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness, interpreting trends or deviations and reporting issues to others for corrective action.

  • Prepares analyses of revenue and expense variances, providing management with explanations for current and prior year changes, and projected impact. Provides information to others that contributes to the development of the Hospital's operating budget.

  • Reviews monthly journal entries for assigned accounts, ensuring all activity is recorded, adjustments are calculated, and corrections are made. Ensures all assigned accounts are reconciled.

  • Performs balance sheet account reconciliations on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis in preparation for the annual external audit. Performs monthly reconciliations of the hospital's main cash disbursements and receipts account, all support schedules, and transaction logs.

  • Responds to somewhat routine questions and solves problems as requested by department managers. Responds to questions or problems pertaining to the budget performance report, as well as all supporting reports used by department managers to manage revenues and expenses.

  • Reviews general hospital and research payment requisitions for appropriateness, assuring compliance with the hospital's general fund approval and policy guidelines as they pertain to non-purchase order goods and services.

  • Performs a variety of accounting related duties such as bank account reconciliations, proofreading of financial documents and participating in special projects as requested.

  • Maintains in an organized manner all supporting back up in various media for review by external auditors. This includes journal entries, budget performance reports, detail trial balance reports, journal entry logs, account reconciliation reports, expanded labor cost report, and various other supporting general ledger schedules.

    To qualify, you must have:

  • High school Diploma or GED.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field preferred

  • Three to six months of related work experience required.

  • Analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in depth, experienced based cross functional knowledge.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
