City of Brookhaven Laborer in Brookhaven, Mississippi

The City of Brookhaven is hiring for a General Laborer position for the city's Water Department.

Summary: Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water, sewer, and storm drainage facilities and systems. 

Examples of Work

  • Determines the location of water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation
  • Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor
  • Insures proper maintenance of equipment and tools; routine cleaning
  • May drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor
  • Excavates, inspects, cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, lines, and service
  • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of manholes, fire hydrants, valves, meters, meter vaults, and boxes
  • Services water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps
  • Operates power equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED/HSE equivalent

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have and maintain a valid State driver's license and CDL certification, or ability to obtain CDL. 
  • Class A, B, or D is acceptable for CDL requirement
  • If you only have a Class R, this position will start at $9.36 p/h.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Must be able to pass a drug/background screen
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance construction, and repair activities
  • Skill in operation of job-related tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
  • Ability to effectively understand, communicate, and carry out written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards
