POSITION: Engineering Manager, Search Mission UnderstandingDESCRIPTION: Etsy seeks a Product Oriented Engineering Manager to join our Search Experience organization to lead the Mission Understanding team. Lead a team of Applied Scientists, ML Engineers, and Product Engineers who build industry leading solutions to help our buyers discover items from Etsy’s unique and diverse inventory for their personalized shopping missions. Work cross functionally with Product, Design and Analytics applying AI to solve user problems. The Search Mission Understanding team within Search Experience aims to solve user problems through the use of machine learning. Our two main tracks are using query understanding techniques at the retrieval layer and applying ML solutions to the user experience layer. We look for heuristics where possible but also leverage traditional and new ML capabilities like Large Language Models. The team is passionate about the work improving the marketplace for our buyer and sellers. Lead a Search squad of Applied Scientists, ML Engineers, and Product Engineers partnering cross functionally with Product, Design, and Analytics. Serve as a coach, mentor and technical advisor to the team. Define and execute the team’s long-term technical strategy in collaboration with Product Management. Design, develop and maintain large scale, performant machine learning systems and Pipelines. Find opportunities to improve our buyers’ search experience and propose a project plan backed up with data analysis. Scope data driven projects and collaborate with internal & external teammates from data modeling and ML infrastructure. Iterate quickly to design, implement, optimize and test new modeling improvements in both offline and production A/B experiment settings. Draw conclusions from experiment results. Foster a culture of high code quality and engineering standards in the team. Write and review technical papers, and contribute to Etsy product research. Commit to advance e-commerce endeavors by building technologies to help Etsy buyers and sellers discover and celebrate handmade goods from all over the world. Support the career development of your direct reports who will be a multidisciplinary group including ML Engineers, Applied Scientists and Product Engineers. REMOTE POSITION.REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, or related analytical field, and 2 years of experience as Staff Applied Scientist, Senior Applied Scientist II, or related job. Requires two years of experience in/with the following: Deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras and Pytorch; Large scale data preprocessing MapReduce frameworks such as Spark, Scalding and Pyspark; Large scale feature engineering using Apache Beam, Tensorflow Transform, and experience with cloud computing services such as Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services; Python, Scala, and Linux Bash shell scripting; Writing high quality production code, demonstrating strong software engineering and coding skills; Leading other engineers to ship solutions using machine learning to address real-world problems at an e-commerce company at scale with traffic exceeding 500 million visits per month; and Developing and applying statistical theory and methods to collect, organize, and interpret data to provide detailed information and produce analytical interpretations. Requires 1 year of experience delivering production solutions utilizing LLM (Large Language Model) technology (e.g. Prompt Engineering and Developing Evaluation System for Prompt).
