The Montclare Research Group (http://montclare.poly.edu/) in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at NYU Tandon School of Engineering (https://engineering.nyu.edu/) is seeking to hire a Research Scholar with protein engineering and characterization expertise to work on an interdisciplinary and collaborative project focusing on developing cutting-edge protein engineering for biomaterials and biocatalysis.
About the Group: The Montclare Research Group focuses on engineering proteins to mimic nature and, in some cases, work better than nature. We exploit nature’s biosynthetic machinery and evolutionary mechanisms to design new artificial proteins.
Project Focus: Development of biomaterials and biocatalysts.
Role: Candidates are expected to work in a multidisciplinary environment. The successful candidate will be driven, creative and team-oriented with a passion for computationally designed biomaterials and biocatalysts. We are seeking individuals with a strong background in computational design, protein engineering, biochemistry, and/or materials design. Successful candidates can start as early as June 1 st . It is expected that the candidate will lead an interdisciplinary research project, be an efficient experimentalist, mentor fellow lab members and be a good lab and team member. Effective communication skills are required.
Duties:
Laboratory Maintenance: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and cleanliness protocols. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
Experiment Support: Assist researchers with setting up experiments, preparing solutions, and conducting routine laboratory procedures. Troubleshoot technical issues as they arise and provide guidance to lab members as needed.
Data Management: Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, results, and observations. Organize data in electronic databases and assist with data analysis as required.
Procurement and Budgeting: Coordinate the ordering of supplies and reagents, track expenditures, and manage the lab budget effectively. Identify cost-saving opportunities and liaise with vendors to negotiate favorable pricing.
Training and Supervision: Provide training to new lab members on laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and equipment usage. Supervise the work of undergraduate students or interns assigned to the lab.
Compliance and Documentation: Ensure adherence to institutional guidelines, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards in all laboratory activities. Maintain documentation related to safety training, equipment calibration, and protocol approvals.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $42,000 to 62,500 (for those with PhD), depending on the candidate’s experience and qualification.
Duration: 3 months with potential for extensions.
Bachelor's, Masters or PhD candidate in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
Previous experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably in a research or academic environment.
Familiarity with laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and safety procedures.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, data analysis software).
Demonstrated attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
