GENERAL DUTIES
Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.
-Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment
-Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisitions
-Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff
-Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories
-Maintains safety and hygiene standards
-Documents laboratory activities
-Performs related duties as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Department of Biology in the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (SNBS) at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking a Senior College Laboratory Technician (Sr. CLT). The Sr. CLT will report to Chief CLTs or designee and to the faculty course coordinator, who reports to Chairperson.
The Senior CLT will join a team that manages the laboratory component of the department's courses. They will manage laboratory resources, including staff, equipment, supplies, living and preserved organisms, and budget. They will reallocate resources, which may include preparing and/or moving equipment, supplies, staff, and/or living/preserved organisms, as needed.
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
Communicate and interact regularly with the faculty, other technical and administrative staff, instructors and students in the Biology Department to prepare and operate the laboratories for course instruction.
Work collaboratively with the SNBS Dean’s office and Biology Department to organize and prepare the resources for biology laboratory courses.
Help implement, and prepare laboratory exercises including any new lesson plans, in biology-related fields, especially molecular biology. The Senior CLT will work closely with faculty in the department including the course coordinator and the Chairperson, and for translating into practical lab experiences the pedagogical objectives of courses.
Responsible for organizing and maintaining Biology teaching laboratories and stockrooms which store equipment, chemicals, models, glassware, slides and other materials when not in use.
Will perform basic and complex biology-related techniques. Must learn any new technical skills that are required with changes in course curricula.
May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position. These duties may include technical assistance to research programs in the department, as requested by the Chairperson.
Schedule: Morning schedule will be required. Flexibility for evening schedule may be needed. Typical morning schedule is from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and evening is from 12 noon to 8:00 P.M. The schedule varies based on how classes are scheduled every semester.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. This position may also require the ability to supervise others.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in biology or a related field of study.
Able to perform basic and complex biology-related techniques.
Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques (such as PCR amplification, western blots, immunoprecipitations, DNA extraction, cloning and gel electrophoresis).
Familiarity with preparing and maintaining live cultures and preserved specimens for student use and dissections.
Previous experience supervising laboratory staff.
Four years of experience managing laboratory courses in higher education institutions.
Ability to work both, morning or evening schedule will be required, based on the demand of a semester.
COMPENSATION
$55,787 - $75,929; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
