The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC), part of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), invites applications for a full-time Technologist I-III in the focus area of Two-Stage Light Gas Gun.
The Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) (https://bcdc.tamus.edu/) - located on the 2,300-acre RELLIS Campus in Bryan, TX - is an ecosystem for agile technology development and service-member-inspired research. The BCDC is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense, Texas A&M University System, and the State of Texas. The $200 million complex is designed to bring together researchers from U.S. universities, the military, and the private sector for collaboration, demonstrations, and high-tech testing of initiatives to help accelerate military innovation for our nation’s defense. 2SLGG Technologist, Levels I-III
Job Description Summary:
The Two-Stage Light Gas Gun Technologist independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields at the Ballistic, Aero-optics, and Materials (BAM) Range, Hypervelocity Impact Laboratory (HVIL) and the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC). The BAM Range at BCDC will be a large-scale, fully enclosed multi-disciplinary research and development facility capable of evaluating high energy laser propagation, hypersonic aerothermodynamics, and hypervelocity impact response of materials and structures. The TAMU HVIL provides a testbed for the development and tailoring of novel monolithic, layered, and architected structures comprised of polymers, composites, metals, ceramics, soft materials, gels, and geomaterials to mitigate HVI threats (e.g., hypersonic weapons, micrometeoroid/orbital debris, atmospheric reentry conditions). The successful applicant will work with researchers and customers to help ensure safe operation of the national asset BAM Range and two-stage light gas gun (2SLGG), in support of critical applied research and technology development. The applicant will have the opportunity to devise new approaches to problems encountered; to work on complex problems of diverse scope when operating and maintaining a large-scale testing facility; and to work with a team of engineers, technologists, and technicians to ensure safe and reliable operations of the BAM Range.
Responsibilities:
Assist in carrying out complex or novel assignments requiring problem-solving and creative approaches to achieve safe and proper operation of the BAM range equipment and facility.- Assist to Ensure BAM Range 2SLGG is operational and ready for testing, under leadership of the Director.- Provides technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise.- Utilizes established engineering principles in the design and evaluation of test range architectures.- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.- Create and interpret technical drawings and schematics.- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with some guidance.- Working with BCDC research teams and other customers, provide expert advice on the use of BAM capabilities to support research.- Provides direct support to BAM range operations and event phases: an/prepare, execution, analysis and reposting, and after-action review.- Provide direct support to data support teams including instrumentation and range systems verification and validation.- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for a 2SLGG Technologist I
- Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum qualifications for a 2SLGG Technologist II
- Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of relevant experience.
Minimum qualifications for a 2SLGG Technologist III
Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Four years of relevant experience.
Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:
Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Skilled in Welding and fabrication techniques.- Skilled in maintenance and operating heavy equipment, ie: Forklifts, Telahandler, Scissors lifts, and Man lifts.- Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.- Strong interpersonal organizational, and customer service skills.- Maintains attention to detail and utilizes sound judgment.- Proven critical and creative thinking skills.- Able to operate autonomously after provided guidance and objectives.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with firearms.- Familiarity with combustibles (smokeless powder, percussion primers, ignition chains, etc.)- Knowledge of ammunition reloading.- Familiarity with electrical measurement equipment and techniques.- Understanding of the materials used in the construction of the gun and projectiles to ensure compatibility and performance.- Familiarity with safety procedures and protocols to handle high-pressure systems safely.
