National Park Service Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor in Bryce Canyon, Utah

Summary This position is located in Bryce Canyon National Park, in the Facility Management Division. This is a temporary promotion not to exceed 1 year, and can be extended up to 4 years. This temporary promotion has no conversion to permanent eligibility. Responsibilities This position is located within the Roads and Trails workgroup of the Facility Management Division of Bryce Canyon National Park and is responsible for planning, scheduling, organizing, directing and controlling all work involving daily operations, routine maintenance, and construction of roads, overlooks campgrounds, trails, signs and vehicle and equipment fleet maintenance as well as special projects. Maintenance Mechanic Supervisors at this level possess journeyman level knowledge for the development, implementation, management, and supervision of short and long-term planning and day-to-day activities of a park, or similar field maintenance operation including facilities such as: Heavy equipment operation, Road maintenance, Carpentry, Masonry, Repair of facilities, Front country trails, Campgrounds, Picnic areas, Sign operations, and/or Vehicle fleet operation/maintenance. Experience includes winter snow operations in a remote area. This position requires a current, valid Class A CDL (Commercial Driver's License). Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver's License. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or(c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: SCREEN OUT - Ability to Lead or Supervise: Ability to Lead or Supervise as a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, WS-4749-10. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and cramped positions. Working Conditions: Works mostly inside heated buildings but on occasion may be required to be outside in extreme weather conditions (-30 degrees F in winter and +90 degrees F in summer) Altitude ranges from 6,000 to 9,100 feet , with exposure to dust, drafts, fumes and loud noise. Protective clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are worn when needed. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
