MnDOT Metro District has 2025 Construction Season temporary vacancies in Roadway Construction Inspection and Construction Surveys for our Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Mendota Heights, and Oakdale offices. These positions may start between March through May and may be employed for the summer of 2025 only or may continue for a duration of up to one year. These positions are great opportunities to gain experience that may lead to a permanent position within MnDOT.
Positions will be filled in the Transportation Associate, Transportation Generalist, or Transportation Generalist Senior classifications. The salary and classification will be determined based on education and/or experience of the selected candidates.
The responsibilities for each area include, but are not limited to:
Roadway Construction Inspection: incumbents will provide support to contract administration and field inspection personnel.
Surveys: incumbents will provide assistance in performing field survey responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for each classification are as follows:
TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATE
Exam Part 1:
- A valid Class D Driver’s License AND the ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver - Class B license with no air brake restrictions and tanker endorsement.
TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST
Exam Part 1:
- Twelve months of experience performing activities in either Surveys (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.), or Construction (roadway, bridge construction, residential or commercial instruction) or related activities.
OR
- A two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent
TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR
Exam Part 1:
Two years of experience performing contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction) or Surveys activities (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.) or related activities.
NOTE: A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
EXAM PART 2
Exam Part 2 for the Transportation Associate, Transportation Generalist and Transportation Generalist Senior classifications require receipt of a passing score of Level 5 or higher on the math and reading portion of the computerized math and reading assessment. [The job offer is contingent on passing a basic math and reading test.] Applicants meeting Exam Part 1 will be contacted to test and may select a test site based on their geographic availability.
ALL POSITIONS WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING:
The driver’s license requirement for both levels is a valid Class D Driver’s License with no major traffic convictions in the past 5 years; OR 4 or more minor violations in the last 3 years; OR any combination of minor violations and at fault accidents totaling 4 or more occurrences.
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience performing Contract Administration (Roadway Construction) and/or Land Surveying/Geomatics work.
Physical Requirements
Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this job will vary but may require the ability to joint lift up to 150 pounds maximum with frequent moving and/or lifting or otherwise transfer of objects of various weights. This job also may require walking, moving, standing, to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job may require strenuous physical labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
