M&T Bank Senior Associate General Counsel - Risk Management and Compliance (Hybrid - See description for potential locations) in Buffalo, New York
** Work Arrangement/Location: This is a hybrid position requiring in-office work three days every week. Ideally the position will be based in Buffalo, NY but may be in an M&T office in Buffalo, NY, Baltimore, MD, NYC, NY, Boston, MA, Wilmington, DE, or Washington, DC.
There is potential for a remote work arrangement if the final candidate is not near one of the above locations.
Overview:
This Senior Associate General Counsel position will lead the legal team responsible for providing legal support and strategic, regulatory and policy advice to key enterprise-wide internal client groups including Risk Management, Regulatory Affairs, and Compliance. This position will provide counsel and advice on complex legal matters affecting the entire organization and will work with key management committees and senior leaders from various business lines and support units.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead and develop the team responsible for providing legal advice impacting key enterprise-wide internal client groups including Risk Management, Regulatory Affairs, and Compliance. Other key enterprise-wide support areas include Regulatory Exam Management, BSA/AML, OFAC, Fair and Responsible Banking, Customer Complaints, CRA, ADA, Marketing, Digital, Government Relations, Political Action Committee and tax compliance.
Maintain a holistic view of the legal and risk positions of these support functions as they relate to products across different lines of businesses.
Perform a variety of complex or specialized legal activities to protect the organization and help ensure it complies with all relevant laws and regulations.
Provide legal advice in multiple areas of expertise to senior executives to ensure their activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including regulations issued by the Federal Reserve, the OCC, NYDFS, FDIC, CFPB, and other federal and state regulatory agencies.
Participate in and provide strategic, regulatory and policy advice to key risk management committees.
Proactively identify areas of potential risk and develop strategies to mitigate risk and educate relevant staff. Collaborate with other functional partners and other Legal teams to ensure appropriate awareness of issues as they arise and assist in resolving matters and driving forward initiatives.
Develop and implement streamlined and strategic policies and procedures for the legal support of multiple divisions.
Prepare or review more complex materials with external legal counsel.
Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
Further the business of the Legal Department by participating in, or leading as appropriate, various projects and initiatives designed to address department-wide priorities.
Scope of Responsibilities
This position is responsible for providing analysis and counsel on legal issues for key enterprise-wide internal client groups including Risk Management, Regulatory Affairs, and Compliance. Incumbent should be able to anticipate and guard against legal risks facing M&T, develop and recommend corporate policy and positions on a broad range of legal issues and conduct and coordinate legal research. This is a senior level position that requires interaction with senior and executive management on a regular basis.
Education and Experience Required:
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Minimum of 10 years' experience as an attorney or other relevant legal experience.
Minimum of 7 years' work leadership experience
New York State or applicable state bar admission.
Experience supporting Risk Management, Regulatory Affairs, and a variety of Compliance functions.
Ability to identify legal issues, evaluate legal risks, and offer solutions.
Strong negotiation, interpersonal, organizational skills.
Excellent writing, analytical and verbal skills.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Education & Experience Preferred:
- Experience supporting risk management and compliance within banking/financial services.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $182,808.10 - $304,680.17 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
