Assistant Professor-Biological Sciences

Montana Tech’s Biological Sciences Department invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The Department offers a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a Master’s degree in Restoration Ecology. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to this program through effective course instruction and student advising. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a research program geared towards peer-reviewed publications and involvement of undergraduate and graduate students.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to instructing undergraduate classes, advising students, and mentoring graduate research. Minimum qualifications include: Ph D. in microbiology, botany, ecology, molecular biology or other closely related field (ABD acceptable; completion required before start date).  Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Individuals with strong backgrounds in research are encouraged to apply. Promotions and award of tenure include both Department standards and Montana Technological University standards.

Duties:

Primary duties for this position include teaching a range of courses that may include but are not limited to:  Botany, Plant Ecology, Restoration Ecology, General Microbiology, Microbiology for Health Science.  The normal teaching expectation is 9 credits/ semester plus active research. Course development in the candidate’s area of expertise is expected.

Student mentoring and research are expected. The candidate is expected to develop research with mutual goals of peer-reviewed publications and undergraduate student involvement.  Efforts to secure external funding are expected. Additional student mentoring is expected for senior research/thesis projects, some of which may be developed independently by the student.

Service duties include active contribution to the department, university, and community. Examples include but are not limited to: advising, assisting in department events, recruiting new students, serving on university committees, and participating in community outreach or volunteer activities.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Earned Ph.D. or ABD (completion of Ph.D. required by start date) in microbiology, botany, ecology, molecular biology, or closely relevant field.

  • University level teaching experience

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

     

  • Post-doctoral experience.

  • Strong background in soil and water chemistry, microbiology, and plant science.

  • Applied experience in molecular sciences

  • Strong skills in statistics and/or bioinformatics

  • Demonstrated potential for establishing an independent, externally-funded research program.

  • Experience with GIS
