AltaGas - Sr Benefits Specialist
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sr. Benefits Specialist to join our Calgary, Canada team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in Canadian and U.S. benefits administration, and a proven ability to manage programs in compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulations. This role includes administering employee benefits, managing leaves of absence (LOA), and supporting workers’ compensation programs while contributing to the development of a unified, North American shared services model.
You Will:
Benefits Administration (Canada and U.S.)
Administer and manage employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plans, and savings programs for both Canada and the U.S.
Coordinate and manage the annual open enrollment process, new hire benefits setup, and life event changes
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulatory requirements for all benefits programs
Process bi-weekly and monthly payroll files in collaboration with vendors (e.g., Manulife, Canada Life, and U.S. benefits providers) and resolve data and integration issues
Oversee weekly demographic integrations in Workday, ensuring data accuracy and addressing errors or discrepancies with HRIS and vendor partners
Reconcile benefits premium billings and invoices, including allocation, coding, and regulatory reporting submissions
Leave and Disability Administration
Provide full-cycle administration for short-term disability (STD), long-term disability (LTD), and leave of absence (LOA) programs in compliance with Canadian and U.S. federal, state, and provincial provisions
Ensure timely submission of STD and LTD claims and employer documentation, proactively managing claim transitions to avoid payment gaps
Collaborate with HR People Services and Payroll teams to ensure employees are accurately placed on leave within HRIS and payroll systems
Maintain and update leave tracking in Workday while ensuring compliance with all legal requirements
Support workers’ compensation claims administration, ensuring timely submissions and adherence to provincial, state, and federal regulations
Oversee maternity and parental leave administration, including benefits pre-payment calculations and employee communications
Regulatory Compliance and Reporting
Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulatory provisions related to benefits, pensions, leave, and workers’ compensation
Prepare and submit regulatory reports, including Form 21 for Canada Life and quarterly pension contribution estimates
Collaborate with HRIS and IT teams to implement and test enhancements to vendor integrations and systems
Create and analyze reports for audits, reconciliations, and other operational needs
You Have:
Experience in Canadian and U.S. benefits administration, including compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulatory requirements for LOA and workers’ compensation
Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian and US benefit laws and regulations
Strong knowledge of disability management programs, workers’ compensation, and leave of absence administration
Proficiency with HRIS systems, particularly Workday, and payroll platforms (e.g., JDE)
Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail
Excellent communication skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and confidentiality
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, supporting shared services initiatives across North America
