Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Fisheries Biologist in Cass Lake, Minnesota

Division: Resource Management Reports to: Fish and Wildlife Program Director Worksite: LLDRM Complex, Cass Lake, MN Work Hours: M-F, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, or as needed. LLBO Status: Exempt Safety Sensitive: No License/Certification Requirements: Valid MN Driver's License, current insurance or be insurable. Summary: This position focuses both on field and administrative duties for the DRM Fisheries Program. Responsibilities include, but not limited to: managing a fish hatchery, supervising fisheries staff, grant writing, developing and implementing fisheries management plans, conducting fisheries field surveys and assessments, designing and implementing fisheries research projects, responding to fisheries-related inquiries and concerns from the public, providing expertise and guidance on fisheries issues, conducting environmental reviews, and working with a variety of stakeholders and agencies on fisheries management. Education Requirements and Experience: Masters or Doctorate degree in Fisheries, Biology, or Natural Resources Management required. Minimum three years of experience in Natural Resources Management as a Fisheries Biologist or closely related field is required. Supervisory Duties: Supervise, train, evaluate and provide general guidance to various fisheries staff including Interns, Seasonal, Technicians, Specialists, and other assigned staff. Write position descriptions, process paperwork, conduct interviews, and assist in the hiring process for seasonal and/or permanent employees. Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned staff. Provide work plans for assigned staff and crews being supervised. Assist in regular meetings with staff to review and discuss work plans and projects. Oversee the training to newly hired employees to the program, survey data collection, and general land management concepts. Coordinate additional training with other agencies, as needed, to conduct work successfully with cooperators. Monitor staff activities and provide verbal and/or written feedback on performance. Duties/Responsibilities: Conduct fisheries surveying and monitoring on Leech Lake Reservation. Work with other agencies on fisheries management and habitat enhancement projects. Promote understanding of cultural importance of tribal resources with cooperating agencies with the goal of improving land and aquatic management practices that may otherwise impair cultural and natural resources. Identify opportunities and work cooperatively with tribal and non-tribal agencies on fisheries protection and enhancement projects. Conduct fish hatchery maintenance and fish stocking operations. Coordinate DRM projects with other DRM Programs and Heritage Sites Office write Ordinances and Tribal Resolutions for review by the Reservation Business Committee (RBC). Present resource management issues to the RBC when requested or needed, presents project review to Local Indian Councils (LICs). Works with representatives from LICs to adequately address local concerns regarding fisheries management actions proposed by DRM and other agencies. Works at the local level to build capacity within tribal communities to address fish issues and traditionally important species through community events, presentations to LICs and outreach. Review proposed projects that may affect fisheries on Leech Lake Reservation and provide written comments and technical guidance of such projects. Maintain detailed, accurate records of job activities. Assist in writing grant proposals to continue and expand the LL DRM Fisheries Program. Administer grants by creating and tracking budgets, writing cooperative agreements, and facilitating project completion within grant timeframes and write reports to funding agencies. Attend and participate in meetings, seminars and training sessions related to job duties. Attend and or conduct all mandatory meetings and trainings as required. Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times. Travel in and out of the state as ne ded for work related activities. Understanding and sensitivity of Native American culture. Adhere to policies governing staff conduct. All other related duties as assigned.
