POSITION

Under direct supervision, performs paraprofessional engineering office and field work involving technical drafting, surveying, inspection, design and construction of Public Works facilities; and provides assistance and information to the public.

Engineering Technician I is an entry-level class in the Engineering Technician series. Incumbents are assigned to work which requires general knowledge of civil engineering and performs more routine calculation, permit, survey and drafting work. This class assists with the more sensitive and technically difficult assignments under the supervision of the City Engineer or Director of Public Works. This class is alternately staffed with Engineering Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher class.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience that provides the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way of qualifying would be:

  • Education:Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and two years of coursework in engineering mathematics through trigonometry, with college level or technical school coursework in construction technology, pre-engineering or similar related technical subjects.A copy of transcripts or degree must be attached to your application.

  • Experience:One (1) year of experience as an engineering intern or an aide.

    CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS

  1. APPLICATION REVIEW:A completed City of Cathedral City employment application and transcripts is required. Incomplete applications may result in disqualification. The application review will begin immediately and will be screened on basis of relevant education, training, and experience.

EXAMINATION PHASE: Based upon the information presented on the application, a limited number of candidates who possess qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selection process may include but is not limited to the following components: application review and evaluation, written examination or exercise, and interview evaluation.

  3. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST: Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list pending further review by the department head and other qualifying procedures.
