Arapahoe County Government Pretrial Officer - Risk Assessment Unit in Centennial, Colorado

Description The Judicial Services Pretrial Officer assigned to the Risk Assessment (RA) Unit promotes public safety by conducting assessments to evaluate defendants' risk for failing to appear for court and for committing future offenses. The RA Unit conducts telephone interviews with defendants to obtain demographic information, verifies criminal history through NCIC/CCIC and other criminal justice data bases, and provides a written report to the Court, District Attorney and defense counsel for advisement hearings. Pretrial Officers assigned to the RA Unit attend advisement hearings on a rotating basis to ensure defendants ordered pretrial supervision are aware of the order and provide defendants with reporting instructions. The RA Unit performs a variety of auditing functions to track orders for supervision, monitor the custody status of defendants ordered pretrial supervision, maintain a small supervision case load and perform other administrative tasks. The Pretrial Officer is required to maintain neutrality in completing risk assessments and in the supervision of defendants. Duties

Interviews defendants for the purpose of establishing and verifying residence, family ties, employment, and past criminal history to assist the Courts in setting appropriate bail bonds. Secure defendant information from the Colorado Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center, Colorado State Courts Data Access system, Denver County Courts system, and other criminal justice databases. The defendant's information is entered into the Division database to verify and document prior criminal history. Information is gathered and included in a report submitted to the District/County courts. Enter and maintain updated bond reports and client supervision information on the Division's computer database. It is essential that all information entered in the database be entered without unnecessary delay and that is be detailed and accurate. Spelling and grammar is essential. Assist in preparing monthly statistical reports and preparation of quarterly and annual reports associated with the Pretrial Services Program. Regularly run reports from the Division database and enter updated information regarding in-custody defendants, caseloads, statistics and other necessary information. Installs Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment on defendants ordered to be on GPS monitoring as a condition of bond. GPS installations are conducted primarily inside Arapahoe County Detention Center, prior to the defendant's release from custody. Other installations may occur in the office. Provides "on-call" duties for the GPS defendants, consisting of monitoring the defendants during non-business hours. Required to answer/make calls, review software and databases, to ensure the safety of protected parties. Attends advisement court to begin paperwork preparation for all defendant's ordered to Pretrial Supervision. Maintain a small caseload supervising and monitoring the defendant's performance with conditions of bond, including electronic monitoring, monitored sobriety, and GPS. Prepares written reports indicating the defendant's compliance or noncompliance with the conditions of bond. Attend court hearings for the purpose of gathering and clarifying information to the District/County Courts. Serves as a Court-appointed Bond Commissioner and makes recommendations to judges that bonds be revoked on subsequent arrests, when there is imminent danger to the community, or due to noncompliance with the conditions of bond. May be required to assist the Pretrial Case Management Unit, Alternative Services/Useful Public Service Program and Community Corrections Program with completing intakes and assisting Business Associates with answering telephone calls and working the front desk at the main office. Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

Knowledge and some experience of the criminal justice system and court p ocedures. Knowledge and experience with Colorado Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center software. Attendance and punctuality are essential to being a successful Pretrial Officer and to the effectiveness of Judicial Services as a whole Ability to make good decisions independently based up a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, training, and judgment. Uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions. Organizes and prioritizes work activities so that work is completed thoroughly, accurately, and efficiently. Excellent time management skills are required. Must be able to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, defendants, judges, attorneys, and other justice system professionals. Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, public administration, or related field. A minimum of 1 year experience working in the criminal justice or social services environment Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
