Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Planned Giving Director will be responsible for the coordination of planned gifts, both deferred and major tax-advantaged for our organization. Responsibilities include active engagement internally by working with colleagues in cultivating prospective donors of planned gifts. The Planned Giving Director will work to identify, cultivate, solicit, and close planned gifts for our organization. Proactively provides follow-up and stewardship on completed gifts.  

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops and implements strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward deferred and major gift donors/prospects through individual visits, personal communication, event participation and volunteer activities. 

  • Maintains an extensive knowledge of fundraising, financial planning, tax issues, and all facets of gift planning instruments, including charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, life insurance, beneficiary designation form options and bequest commitments. 

  • Collaborates with donors and their legal/financial advisers to solicit, secure and document current and future gifts. Working knowledge of complex gift options such as tangible property, real property and closely held stock. 

  • Manages the Legacy Circle Program, which honors individuals who make provisions to our organization’s healthcare through documented estate plans. 

  • Serves as an internal resource for members of our organization fundraising staff in their gift discussions with planned giving/major donors. 

  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Development and the Donor Communications and Stewardship Director to create and implement marketing and communication plans for the advancement of gift planning options and instruments.

Licensing/Certification

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree and three or more years of progressively responsible development experience, preferably in higher education or healthcare, or equivalent experience in financial management or trust administration. Comparable knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted. 

Work Experience

  • Estate Planning Background (preferred)

  • Advanced training in fundraising, estate and financial planning (preferred)

  • Familiarity with Blackbaud CRM donor database (preferred)

  • Thorough knowledge of planned giving instruments in a non-profit setting or financial planning/trust administration 

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement sophisticated fundraising strategies for the successful cultivation and solicitation of major gifts using planned giving techniques 

  • Experience and/or ability to design, implement, and market a comprehensive planned giving program 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the full spectrum of development principles and activities including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, administration, working with high-level volunteer committees, and the ability to apply this knowledge creatively to specific fund-raising projects

Must be able to communicate with donors and prospect by phone and mail to determine funding guidelines and most effective process to secure new or renewed funding. Normal office environment with some exposure to outside environments. Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, and/or irregular hours. Ability to read and comprehend.
