Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience.
This position is part of the Region Services – Transmission Production Standards group located in the Carolinas West region of Duke Energy and will sit in the Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC) headquarters downtown Charlotte, NC. This work group is responsible for the development of standards used by the transmission design engineering teams. This role will be responsible for the development of standards for Transmission Line designs of lines at 44kV and above. The standards developed may include specifications, design guides, standard drawings, PLS files, PLS parameters, item numbers, compatible units (CUs), and multilevel CUs.
Job Responsibilities
Major responsibilities include:
Development of production standards used by the Transmission Lines design teams in Carolinas West.
Using the best available procedures, codes and practices to design, and create standards, drawings and material CU’s for various designs used in the engineering of transmission lines.
All work assignments will be performed in a manner consistent with the Duke Energy Safety Manual as well as with Federal, State, and local laws.
Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.
Assist other engineering and C&M teams as necessary.
Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide guidance to others including teammates and contractors.
Provides engineering/technical expertise in the principles of Transmission Line design.
Technical Skills:
Familiarity with transmission line design software (e.g PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE, MFAD, etc.)
Understanding and experience with NERC Compliance Standards including but not limited to: FAC-008
Demonstrate use of and ability to interpret design codes used for designs such as NEC, NESC and others as applicable.
Demonstrated knowledge of transmission line design.
Demonstrated experience with construction project work, Maximo, Fusion, TIM and other work tools to create drawings, multilevel CU’s and other standards for transmission line designs.
Basic Requirements Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE). A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
Minimum 4 years of engineering experience
Basic Requirements Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
Minimum 5 years of engineering experience with a PE
Minimum 6 years of engineering experience without a PE

Skilled in engineering theories and principles
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Skilled principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
Working Conditions
Office environment with some field and factory visits.
Flexible work schedule
Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
