About Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative

MEC is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative serving over 32,000 accounts across portions of nine Southside Virginia counties and five northern North Carolina Counties. MEC was formed in 1938, by the members - for the members, with the mission of providing services and creating opportunities to enhance the quality of life in rural southern Virginia. MEC is headquartered in Chase City, Virginia, with three district offices located in Emporia, Chase City and Gretna, Virginia. The region is uniquely located an hour from Richmond, Va and Raleigh, NC.

Over the last 85 years, MEC has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of its members, including additional services such as telephone in the 1950's and EMPOWER Broadband, formed in 2018, to close the digital divide throughout the communities served by the cooperative. Today, the for-profit subsidiary serves nearly 6,000 subscribers and is rapidly expanding its service territory across six counties.

About the Region
