POSITION SUMMARY:
We are looking for an energetic professional with strong conceptualization and analysis skills, as well as an interest in future management roles. This role is for an individual that spans between business and technology – solving for business opportunities and challenges using data as a tool. This is an individual who gains a deep understanding of an area of the business, helps design logical data structures to represent it holistically, and communicates those structures to technology teams who implement. This person works closely with business leaders, analysts, application developers, data warehouse developers, and architects to drive data-centric solutions and data-centric components of broader solutions from idea to implementation. This creates focused data solutions, such as marts and reporting layers, for its area of the business. A successful candidate in this role is goal-oriented, contextually-aware, collaborative, and open minded. A strong ability to articulate concepts in ways that are understood by both business and technology resources, and an ability to foster effective communication between business and technology resources are required for success.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Listen, understand, and internalize the business’ strategy and goals, becoming an individual who makes tactical decisions supporting their achievement
Understand the data landscape as it relates to the aligned business area
Maintain a working knowledge of the software and applications serving the aligned business area
Maintain deep knowledge of the data lifecycle for the aligned business area and its relationship to the business process and software generators of data
Collaborate with business leaders and functional resources to ideate the data-centric components of business solutions
Define logical data structures required for those solutions in a way that meets defined and anticipated needs
Drive toward holistic underlying data capture to ensure that data asset value is generated, and velocity of subsequent solutions accelerates
Collaborate with technology teams, in data architecture, application development and data warehouse development, to ensure that the technology teams internalize the business’ needs and that technical solutions meet the business’ needs
Create detailed requirements when required and work with others within the aligned business area to foster effective data-centric requirement creation
Work as a subject matter expert for business data within projects ranging from small efforts to major transformations
Work alongside analysts and data scientists to understand how the business needs to be analyzed and understood and translate those needs into underlying data design and requirements
Create custom focused data assets from approved sources for use by analysts and data scientists in the aligned business area (data marts, assets underlying BI layers and reports)
Identifies opportunities to obtain and leverage external data sources to solve business problems
Act as a driver of effective collaboration between business and technology teams by taking the role of facilitator and collaborative interpreter
Evaluates the results driven by data-centric solutions to ensure that investments in those solutions are yielding benefits
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will likely have some combination of these qualifications, experiences, and skills.
At least 5 years of experience in a similar position or in a role that performed many of the same functions – often has been an analyst, developer, data architect, or consultant delivering data-centric solutions, or has been the “person in the business who does data” regardless of formal role
A degree in a technical or a business field with a focus on quantitative sciences, analytics, or solutioning (Engineering, Finance, Economics, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, etc.)
A combination of degrees in both technology and business fields is a plus
Reasonable proficiency in data manipulation skills in SQL, Python, or equivalent.
Experience using BI Tools such as Tableau, or equivalent
Demonstrated understanding of logical data architectural concepts
Understands business architecture concepts and is proficient in understanding business processes
Demonstrated ability to ideate and define solutions when presented with a business problem or concept
Effective at concise logical communication of ideas
Communicates in the language used by technology teams
Communicates in the language used by business teams
Able to foster constructive cross-disciplinary debate to attain a solution
Is comfortable speaking in front of audiences from executive level down
Comfortable with ambiguity
Possesses contextual awareness and can solve for both detailed needs and their contribution to the greater whole
Is very detail-oriented, identifying upstream prerequisites and downstream dependencies in data-centric efforts
Is assertive but open-minded
Is a motivated self-starter
Embraces change and is a change agent
Is business outcome oriented
Possesses an effective balance of idealism and practicality
Understands when to solve and when to leverage existing solutions – knows when to think “outside of the box” and when what is “in the box” generates an effective result

The range for this position is $95,900 to $159,700. When determining candidate offers, we consider experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location among other factors. This job is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and Kemper benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, 401k, etc.)
This position can be worked out of our Chesterfield, MO, Birmingham, AL, Chicago, IL office, or Downers Grove, IL office onsite.
