Job Purpose The Principal Engineer, Electromagnetic Design will be working as part of Hyliion's KARNO technology team located in Milford, Ohio, towards improving modeling accuracy of electric machine losses and flux, design & optimize electric powertrain, develop test plans, construct prototypes, and perform measurements in the dyno lab. The Principal Engineer, Electromagnetic Design will report to the Senior Manager, Electrical & Controls. Duties and Responsibilities Linear electric generator electromagnetic and thermal design and system optimization including cost, efficiency, performance, and power density. Perform characterization tests to evaluate the impact of new materials in electric machine/system performance and efficiency and to validate system models and parameter estimates. Development of advanced MATLAB functions to model motor performance and efficiency. Perform 2D/3D FEA simulations to derive the electromagnetic behavior of various electromechanical components. Develop analytical models to improve the flux linkage and loss calculation for various types of electric machines. Optimize the electric machine design to seamlessly mesh with the powertrain. Electric machine dyno loss and characterizations. Explore and design innovative electric machine topology, including emerging technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods. Create simulation model for thermal model development and system engineering. Develop electric machine component specifications and work with suppliers. Qualifications include: Education, Experience and Certifications BS in Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics Master's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or similar fields preferred At least 15 years in Electromagnetic or Electrical Engineering Strong fundamentals in electromagnetics, energy conversion, and electric machines, preferably permanent magnet. Construction and manufacturing processes for electric machines, including determination of inspection and testing requirements. Testing high power and high voltage (600V+) systems Skills and Abilities Strong MATLAB/Simulink or similar programming language skills. Experience with calculating parameters and modeling losses in electric machines Hands-on experience in analyzing electric motors using Finite Element Methods and co-simulations (preferably ANSYS Maxwell 2D/3D and Simplorer). Experience in validating electric machine technology through prototyping and laboratory testing. Experience in electric machine efficiency characterization Familiarity with converter duty and high voltage electrical insulation for electrical machine applications. Familiarity with inverter machine system integration Familiarity with industry standards and regulations for electric machines, such as IEEE, IEC, and UL standards. Knowledge on electric machine thermal modeling Knowledge of motor control theory Proficient with leading and managing projects Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Role Classification and Working Conditions This is a salaried, exempt-level position.
