Job Description

Responsible for modeling and climate-smart farming in beef cattle and bison production using precision livestock farming technologies, specifically greenhouse gas emissions. The program seeks applicants who would enhance the teaching and research in the Department of Animal Science and the College of Agriculture and Life Science.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Area of Excellence Quantifiable Animal Performance in the Department of Animal Science.

  • Be responsible for collecting and analyzing research data associated with beef and bison production in the Northern Great Plains (North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas) , which may include nutrition, reproduction, behavior, or animal health.

  • Possess training and expertise in ruminant nutrition, data analytics and modeling, and precision livestock farming technology, including C-Lock Greenfeed Emission Monitoring system.

  • Mentor and train undergraduate and graduate students.

Major duties:

  • Domestic travel to conduct the measurement, monitoring, reporting, and validation (MMRV) of the methane data being collected by C-Lock Greenfeed Emission Monitoring™ system in beef cattle and bison.

  • Study design and implementation,

  • Data collection and analysis,

  • Review of relevant literature,

  • Development of analytical methodologies, including computer models and decision support tools using artificial intelligence technologies,

  • Writing of manuscripts and reports,

  • Working with the mentor and advising committee for coordinating and managing relevant projects,

  • Development of analytical methodologies,

  • Connecting with major stakeholders in beef cattle and bison production to collect data to build decision-support tools based on artificial intelligence.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience.

  • PhD degree in cattle nutrition, animal science, or closely related fields.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with dairy nutrition, rumen microbiology, statistical analyses, model development and assessment, and precision livestock farming techniques (sensor technologies for dairy cows). Because this project is in conjunction with bison producers in the Northern Great Plains (North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas), ability to communicate with ranchers and farmers effectively.
