What we want

The Senior Research Associate assists with research on bone health and repair. Manages colonies of genetically modified mice, performs skeletal architecture assessment by using X-rays, performs cell culture and uses molecular methods such as western blotting, PCR, microscopy to study skeletal homeostasis and pathophysiology. Trains/mentors students in laboratory safety and lab techniques; documents lab records, protocols, results when appropriate and performs administrative duties as needed.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Four years of related professional experience with a minimum of 2 years of experience in either mouse handling or molecular biology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in live mouse surgeries and tissue collection, paraffin or cryo tissue sectioning, knowledge and skill to perform western blotting, PCR, cell culture, and microscopy, skeletal imaging

  • Experience in animal techniques including blood collection, subcutaneous pellet implantation, surgeries will be preferred. Ability to perform work that involves preparation of laboratory equipment, supplies, and chemicals for research

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment.

  • Ability to multitask, work independently and as part of team.

  • Good organization and documentation skills.

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with use of standard programs such as Word and Excel.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to handle biological specimens and learn new techniques (mouse surgeries or cell culture or RNA/DNA/Protein work or tissue sectioning).

    Responsibilities:

  • Animal Studies: Designs, plans, conducts and coordinates experiments in support of various research projects. Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis and technical evaluation of research experiments. Provides mouse colony management including general health checks and breeding; coordinates with TIGMS, lab members and PI on animal studies. Performs dietary intervention, blood draws, tail or ear snip collection, injection by ip or sc, euthanasia, tissue collection and processing. Performs mouse surgeries including subcutaneous pellet implants, fractures. Performs skeletal imaging by microCT and DEXA.

  • Cell culture and molecular techniques: Performs and troubleshoots molecular techniques such as western blotting, PCR, nucleic acid isolation. Performs cell culture and microscopy. Performs tissue sectioning and histology

  • Lab maintenance: M aintains laboratory equipment and ensure equipment is properly maintenance (BSC cabinet, anesthesia machine, eye washes, etc.) . Prepares laboratory and documentation for all inspections (IACUC, EHS, IBC, AALAC) . Maintains fresh and cryogenic samples by ensuring cryopreservation

  • Administrative Duties : Performs administrative duties as needed such as ordering supplies, picking up packages, etc. Serves as a liaison with collaborators of Iyer lab to update them organize animal studies. Evaluates and summarizes experiment results using computers and relevant technical instruments.

  • Training and record keeping: T rains students in laboratory safety and lab techniques (detailed above). Ensures students are working on assigned duties in a safe and efficient manner. Consolidates and documents relevant scientific data. Maintains updated records of protocols, specimens and equipment maintenance.
