Weyerhaeuser is searching for a salaried exempt Technical Director for the Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) facility inbeautiful Columbia Falls, MT. This position is part of the Mill Leadership Team atthe ColumbiaFallsMDFand reportsto the Plant Manager. The Technical Director provides technical expertise to support the mill from a product performance,customer expectation and product quality standpoint.

Columbia Falls, MT is located in the Flathead Valley of northwestern Montana. An area that is growing and has abundantrecreational activities. The proximity to Glacier National Park, skiing, boating, fishing, hiking and many other outdooractivities make this a wonderful area to live and call home.

Key Functions

  • Lead, promote, and demonstrate a strong focus and personal value of safety at all times.
  • Responsibility for oversight of Formaldehyde Panel Emission Certification in accordance with the regulation of EPA TSCA.
  • Title VI and the CARB ATCM 93120area key responsibilitiesof this position.
  • May, at times, serve as delegate for the Plant Manager in his/her absence.
  • The Technical Director is responsible for leading lab staff & procedures including:
  • Optimizing and maintaining recipes for MDF/HDF products.
  • Planning and managing additives (resin, wax, etc.) usage and inventories.
  • Subject matter expert in the MDF manufacturing process. Maintaining a presence in the manufacturing environment identifying optimization and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Leading product trials and providing recommendations based on customer and industry feedback
  • Supporting, maintaining, and growing business technical organization.
  • Managing and reporting quality trends, areas for improvement, and continuously improving key quality metrics.
  • Providing technical support for internal customers regarding new product development, new applications, and new implementation of technology. Claims reporting and resolution
  • Maintaining the Quality Management System and 3rd party accreditations
  • Ensuring lab instrumentation is calibrated and verified for product and process key variables
  • Problem solving on an as needed basis (serving as the lead technical resource)
  • Maintaining relationships with 3rd parties i.e. vendors, certification bodies, customers. In conjunction with the MDF Salesteam, understanding how our customers use our product offerings and keeping up to date with current technical trends iscritical. An innovative mindset and approach is key to success.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement in safety, housekeeping, waste reduction, quality, productivity, customersatisfaction and cost management in the lab and QC department. Further, as a member of the site Lead Team, activeengagement in these activities in broader support of the site business is expected also.
  • Actively involved in the development of team members through training, coaching and regular performance evaluations oflab personnel.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, or another related field will be highly regarded. Non-related degrees or theequivalent amount of working experience will also be considered.

  • Knowledge of engineered wood product manufacturing processes is preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years technical experience including PS2 quality standards will also be considered.
  • Must have track record of consistently demonstrating leadership & supervisory skills as well as positive influence andaccomplishments in safety, quality, productivity, change management, and people development.
  • Demonstrated success in working with customers, direct reports, peers, other department employees includingmanagers.
  • Travel with MDF Sales is expected to understandcustomers’business, address quality issue(s), and work withcustomers to improve product performance for their applications when needed
  • Team oriented and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be proactive in process improvements and have excellent follow-through in meeting commitments.
  • Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and experience with industrial statistics and statistical analysis.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects with strong organizational skills with very close attention to detail.
  • Must be able to prioritize and multitask with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Critical thinker, enthusiastic and positive approach towards team members and work.
  • Ability to meet timelines and deal tactfully and courteously with business stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupation hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safeperformance of assigned duties.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic.
  • Knowledge of quality control techniques and wood technology measurements.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve problems and engage with associates

Compensation:This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $95,000 to $142,500 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 10% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours.
