Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Temporary Biological Science Research Technician 1: Field Technician for the Department of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University ( OSU ).
The Department of Integrative Biology is seeking a temporary Field Technician to help launch an NSF CAREER grant in the Cornelius Lab. The Cornelius Lab studies ecophysiology and behavior in birds that cope with challenging environmental conditions. Their research involves descriptive and experimental work on both wild and captive populations in a variety of bird species, including multiple species of songbird and shorebird. They work on questions regarding unpredictable food supply, weather, predation and ecotoxins. The individual in this position will aid in data entry, will help collect summit metabolic rates and blood samples from birds in the field, and will process samples that are necessary to determine grant directions.

Key Responsibilities
70% Research support
assisting with sample processing
assisting with data collection in field studies
assisting with data collection during methodological pilot studies
10% Meeting with supervisor and other team members
- Engage in open and respectful communication with research collaborators.

completing applications for fieldwork permits

What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
What You Will Need
- Experience working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with diverse groups of students, researchers, and staff.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
Prior experience with bird handling, nest searching, and blood sampling
Prior experience with data management
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a biology related field
Ability to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manner
Ability to communicate clearly with other team members
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position will require working in a field environment (e.g., high elevation, cold and warm temperatures, biting insects, hiking, etc), and will require working with live birds in captive and field environments, as well as standard computer work. Field work may include travel, camping in remote locations, traversing uneven/rugged terrain and risks associated with backcountry travel. Research schedules and locations will be discussed and agreed upon collaboratively by the individual and supervisor.
