Summary:
As the Organization grows, the Manager of Financial Counseling is spending much time in NY, training the Nuvance West Financial Counselors in our new system-wide charity policy and assisting them in learning the qualifications for Medicaid. There is a need for additional staff to be able to review and approve charity applications. The new "Financial Counseling Specialists" will also be able to review and approve charity applications for the Organization.
Responsibilities:
Assists uninsured and underinsured patients with applying for State and Federal governmental assistance programs, as well as charitable assistance from the Organization. Helps patients gather all appropriate documentation and completes all necessary applications. Conducts interviews at bedside when feasible to ensure optimal customer service and personal attention.
Trains, develops and mentors new Financial Counselors in all facets of Financial Counseling responsibilities. Collaborates with Financial Counselors from across the Organization on the more challenging potentially eligible Medicaid cases and the more complex Financial Assistance accounts.
Refers potentially qualified patients to the best source of financial assistance available based on the patient's unique financial circumstance and future medical needs. This may include performing a complex analysis of the patient's assets and financial liabilities. Must comprehend how the intricacies of the patient's unique financial status relate to the regulations mandated by existing assistance programs.
Works in collaboration with Clinical Resource Management, providers, clinical departments, revenue cycle departments and the Insurance Verification Team to address patients' financial needs and secures potential sources of funding. Collaborates expeditiously to ensure patients' timely advancement through the continuum of care.
Performs insurance eligibility verification and executes payer requirements as needed. Includes initiating eligibility transactions via the internet, contacting the payer to obtain eligibility, benefits and billing information. Updates information to ensure that correct financial classification and information is on patients' accounts. May discuss Medicare Lifetime Reserve days with patients or designated representatives.
Collects payments from patients, including prompt pay discounts and discusses payment arrangements.
Participates in the continuum of the life of a claim by working collaboratively with the collection departments to identify patients that may need assistance. Includes review and recommendation for bad debt based on historical patient information.
Assists PAFS management and other clinical department managers with urgently needed requests. Assists Financial Counseling Manager with reviewing charitable care cases. May be required to adjust patient balances based on charitable care approvals.
Stays abreast of ever changing laws and regulations mandating both Medicaid eligibility and the extension of Financial Assistance in not-for-profit, acute care settings.
Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position. Maintains a high level of ethical integrity while processing applications for government funding and other assistance programs.

Other Information:
·Master's Degree preferred.
Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese preferred.
·Certified Access Counselor through Access Health CT.
·NY Assister certification through NYS Marketplace.
·National Association of Healthcare Access certification
