Job Title: Curator, Exhibits
Job Status: Full-time
Job Summary: Under limited supervision, the Curator of Exhibits uses specialized knowledge in museum studies and exhibition skills obtained through experience and/or formal training to maintain and develop innovative permanent and temporary exhibits at the Arab American National Museum (AANM). The Curator of Exhibits will be deeply committed to foregrounding the history and culture of the Arab American community through its exhibition spaces. This position involves a commitment to research, interpretation of cultural and historical objects, and an interest in collaboratively planning and executing public and educational programs centered around AANM-s core galleries and temporary exhibits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of AANM-s core, temporary, and traveling exhibitions
Develop and implement the museum's exhibit strategy and vision, in alignment with the museum's goals
Collaborate with Museum team to implement updates to and renovation of the AANM core galleries
Oversee and participate in exhibit designs, layouts, construction, and other logistics
Lead and manage the exhibit development process, from concept to installation, including budgeting, scheduling, contracting, and evaluation
Work collaboratively with museum staff to develop or enhance existing events and programs for the Museum-s diverse stakeholders and audiences to engage with featured exhibition and the core galleries
Collaborate with occasional exhibiting artists to help shape and implement artistic vision and exhibit design
Network with other institutions to host traveling exhibits as well as to send AANM proprietary exhibits for viewing in other venues
Collaborate and study with Curatorial, Research and Content teams to write exhibit scripts, labels and other educational materials
Assist with grant writing and reporting for exhibit projects, as assigned
Prepare and manage departmental budget
Plan, assign, monitor and manage the work of others
Review performance and evaluate results achieved by subordinates
Oversee, coach and mentor subordinates
Lead tours of exhibitions as needed
Research and apply best practices and emerging trends in exhibit design, interpretation, and evaluation
Research artists, historical figures and events, objects, and themes in preparation for exhibitions
Present information about objects and exhibitions through tours and presentations
Ensure the proper care and maintenance of the exhibits and the exhibit spaces
Represent the museum in professional networks and forums related to exhibits and museology
Mentor students and interns who will assist with organizing shows, promoting exhibitions and events, and do research on artists and objects
Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of exhibition principles and practices, exhibition management issues and trends and the care and conservation of collections
Budget management, including creating and maintaining a budget
Skill in:
Excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills
Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office
Ability to:
Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives
Provide a high level of customer service
Work effectively and creatively in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:
Minimum Degree Required:
Bachelors- degree
Master-s degree preferred
Required Disciplines:
Arab American Studies, Museum Studies, Exhibit Design, Middle Eastern Studies, Museum Studies, or related field
and
At least 5 years of experience in a museum setting or any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by Human Resources
