Ford Motor Company SME – Battery Structures Leak Testing in Dearborn, Michigan

In this position…

The Core Structural Systems organization at Ford Motor Company is seeking an employee to work as a leak engineer/testing of battery enclosures, Subject Matter Expert (SME). The Core Structural Systems Department writes and maintains the core quality documents, Engineering Specifications, and Design Rules for use by the engineering teams across Ford Motor Co.

What you'll do…

  • Collaborate with the cross functional team to establish comprehensive leak requirements for battery enclosures, aligning with product specifications and industry standards.

  • Develop and implement robust production and design verification testing procedures to ensure leak prevention and detection capabilities meet the defined requirements. This includes defining test methodologies and acceptance criteria.

  • Research and implement innovative methodologies and processes for identifying leak locations and quantifying leak rates.

  • Develop standardized and efficient leak repair methods to maximize throughput and minimize repair time while maintaining quality. This includes developing repair procedures and training materials.

  • Contribute to the design of battery enclosures, ensuring ease of leak detection and repair while maintaining structural integrity and other key design parameters.

  • Author, maintain, and update key engineering documents, including Design Rules, Engineering Specifications, and other relevant documentation, ensuring global consistency and compliance.

  • Ensure consistent and compliant leak testing processes are implemented globally by overseeing program sign-off in Engineering Sign-Off (ESO) process.

  • Sign-off on Significant Characteristic Communication Agreement Forms (SCCAF) and ensure compliance with relevant quality system requirements.

  • Sign-off on Gauge R&R studies for leak testing equipment, validating measurement accuracy and repeatability for Design Verification (DV), Production Validation (PV) and Initial Production (IP) phases.

  • Provide training and guidance to the Product Development team on leak testing capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

  • Actively participate in cross-functional teams (Research, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers) to develop and implement innovative technologies aimed at improving First Time Through (FTT) rates, reducing capital expenditures, and lowering component costs.

  • Lead projects to define and implement effective methods for leak testing battery enclosures after battery assembled to the vehicle.

  • Lead and participate in the resolution of production issues, including stop-ships, field service actions, and warranty claims, collaborating with Vehicle Operations (VO), Supplier Technical Assistance (STA), and Purchasing teams.

  • Proactively incorporate lessons learned from production issues, testing, and design reviews into updated Quality & Engineering Documents, ensuring continuous improvement of processes and products.

You'll have…

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or fluid-dynamics related field of study.

  • 2+ years of experience working in field related to leak engineering/testing/ and/or fluids.

  • 5+ years of experience using CAD tools including Catia and Teamcenter.

  • 2+ years of writing DFMEA’s, SCCAF’s, Engineering Specifications, and Design Rules.

  • Ownership mentality for leak detection and repair in battery enclosures.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data using statistical tools.

  • Experience with adhesives and sealers.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Experience in manufacturing environment.

  • Willingness to travel.

This position is a range of salary grades 6-7 .
