Job Description:
Summary: The person in this position will be part of an innovative and collaborative geotechnical engineering team of over 90 geotechnical engineers and geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team serves the fuels, mining, power, and public sectors. We provide a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, geohazard assessments, and groundwater and seepage.
Key responsibilities may include some or all of the following:
Helping develop geotechnical programs including fieldwork, laboratory work, and analyses and design as appropriate.
Performing and supporting fieldwork, which includes soil and rock drilling, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, material testing, and construction observation.
Performing field observation and processing of in-situ testing data such as SPT, CPT, PPD, DMT, Rock packer testing, etc.
Developing or supporting the development of a comprehensive laboratory testing program for obtaining geotechnical parameters for modeling and design. This requires familiarity with advanced laboratory testing.
Performing advanced geotechnical analysis and design through numerical modeling.
Performing engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of more senior engineering professionals.
Developing field data in support of advanced geotechnical analysis as directed.
Preparing written design/assessment/evaluation reports.
Traveling for periodic out-of-town assignments for field assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in geotechnical engineering or a related field
Strong technical skills in a range of geotechnical analysis and design applications
Solid theoretical background in soil-structure interaction, saturated and unsaturated groundwater flow, soil and rock mechanics, computational mechanics
Understanding of the basis of finite element and finite difference analysis, including the use of linear and non-linear constitutive models
Geotechnical computer modeling capabilities
Knowledge of geotechnical modeling software, such as FLAC, FLAC3D, GeoStudio suite, Midas GTS NX, MPM, and Plaxis
Ability to perform critical evaluation of outputs for geotechnical analyses
Computer skills including word processing and working with spreadsheets
Strong oral and written communication skills
Willingness and ability to travel
Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering or a related field
Relevant internship or co-op experience
Experience with Matlab, UDEC, 3DEC, and PFC software
Proficiency in FISH (programming language for FLAC) and Python
Knowledge of common engineering programming languages, such as C++, Visual Basic, Fortran, etc.
Solid background in probability and statistics for engineering
Desire to work with a team of geotechnical engineers in modeling and mentor less experienced staff
Desire to perform business development and engage in client relationship-building
Background/experience working on mining and/or dam projects
