Description

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and directs the automotive and allied mechanical maintenance, repair, replacement and use of the general City automotive fleet to insure continuous, efficient, and economical operation; and performs related work as required .

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, organizes , and directs the maintenance and service activities for a large fleet of automotive equipment and the operation of repair shops and service garages.

  • Obtains data on specific nature and scope of maintenance problems and facilities available to meet these problems.

  • Analyzes data, including but not limited to performance records and cost to determine significant figures, points of control , and areas of needed improvement.

  • Formulates maintenance policies and practices.

  • Establishes work standards and performance goals.

  • Plans division organization and distribution of staff and equipment.

  • Coordinates maintenance activities with operating department and division operations.

  • Prepares maintenance budgets.

  • Investigates and evaluates new methods, procedures , and equipment to increase efficiency and economy of maintenance operations.

  • Reviews test reports.

  • Makes recommendations on major equipment purchases and reviews plans and specifications for such equipment.

  • Investigates serious complaints of performance and major breakdowns of equipment.

  • Assigns supervisory personnel and instructs subordinate supervisors in operating policies, routines , and procedures.

  • Reviews new plans and proposed changes in operating methods, routines , and procedures to be employed.

  • Reviews special and periodic reports submitted by subordinates.

  • Confers with subordinates and conducts staff conferences.

  • Approves work plans.

  • Issues general work orders and regulations relating to methods and procedures.

  • Inspects shops and service garages to observe and improve maintenance activities and evaluate performance of staff and equipment.

  • Reviews training programs, grievance procedures, promotional recommendations, and disciplinary actions.

  • Prepares budget estimates and general operating reports.

  • Assigns vehicles to City departments in accordance with their needs.

  • Prepares specifications for equipment and recommends purchase and retirement of vehicles.

  • Serves on the Accident Trial Board.

  • Conducts periodic inspections of all facilities and assures prompt repairs are completed in a timely manner .

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • Bachelor’s degree with specialization in engineering, industrial management, or other closely related field.

  • Seven (7) years in responsible management position.

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

    Qualifications (preferred):

  • Seven (7) years in responsible management position in a large scale automotive maintenance activity which has demonstrated ability to plan, organize , and coordinate large scale operations.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
