Water Management has a vacancy for a Maintenance Crew Supervisor leading a 5-person excavation crew. These crews maintain pipelines, installing new water/sewer services, hydrants, valves, manholes and meters. This position is one of 6 crew supervisors within Excavation who are responsible for planning the day’s work orders and priorities via the CMMS. This job requires technical judgment working in partnership with the Field Supervisors over Water Distribution & Wastewater Collections. This role works closely with their crew leader to ensure appropriate work order data and images are recorded as well as accounting for materials used.
This job is required to work weekend rotation for stand-by/recall, overtime, and/or call back for emergencies and during all types of weather conditions. You can expect to cross train in the various workgroups within Water & Sewer Maintenance (listed below) in order to serve Stand-by/Recall duty:
Meter Services: Installs and repairs residential water meters and registers. Diagnose and repair small leaks, replace meter boxes, and setters, test and repair large meters
Outfall: Clears easements and assists with manhole repairs and inspections also respond to sanitary sewer system overflows
Collection Systems: Assists with closed circuit television inspections, flush truck operations and sanitary sewer overflow response
Distribution Systems: Repairs and maintain valves and fire hydrants within the water system
As a leader, this role requires a high degree of interpersonal skills while making mature judgment calls, and exercising professional behavior at all times. You are expected to monitor staff’s performance related to work objectives and effectiveness, conduct performance evaluations, document, record, and manage operational data related to work performance and production.
Duties/Responsibilities
Supervises field operations in assigned area; supervision may be exercises over operation, and/or maintenance of equipment; construction, repair, and maintenance projects; grounds maintenance activities
Assigns and inspects work; performs quality control; ensures adequate staffing levels; and ensure compliance with applicable safety and operational policies and practices.
Assists with procurement and budget preparation; serves as the first level of approval for purchases; writes specifications for purchases; coordinates the process for acquiring equipment; provides input into budget planning; and oversees inventory maintenance.
Prepares maintains, and/or reviews fiscal and other reports, records, and databases; reviews the work of others to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Provides customer and staff assistance; responds to questions, concerns, complaints, and emergency requests; troubleshoots complex issues; reports accidents and injuries; conducts safety investigations; and provides information on policies and procedures.
Supervising grounds maintenance activities at City property including treatment plants and other treatment facilities.
Using and maintaining power tools and hand equipment.
Performing excavations, grading, snow removal, tree removal, and landscaping.
Supervising workgroup responsible for large, complex, or high profile construction, maintenance, community development, and/or facilities projects.
Enforcing safety procedures and regulations, assigning and monitoring work duties, and performing complex labor and equipment operational duties.
Providing supervision by assembling work crews; organizing assignments; inspecting equipment and supplies; solving problems; ensuring work is completed according to appropriate requirements; and providing assistance as required.
Functioning as a working supervisor to oversee work quality, training, instructing, and scheduling work.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Associate’s degree, or equivalent
Two years of equipment operation/driving experience or maintenance experience related to assignment
Prior lead or supervisory experience.
A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
OSHA Competent Person and Trenching/Shoring certifications or the ability to obtain within 1 year of start date
