About the position
We are seeking two temporary Fishery Technicians to assist with activities associated with research, monitoring, and evaluation of endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon. Field activities will include trapping, PIT-tagging, and collecting biological information from adult and juvenile Sockeye Salmon, interviewing anglers to obtain harvest information, and participating in trawl surveys on several bodies of water in central Idaho. The official duty station is the Eagle Fish Hatchery, but the majority of field activities will occur in the Sawtooth Basin near Stanley, Idaho. Housing, food, and transportation will be provided while in the field (dormitory and camp groceries). Duties may also include assisting at the Eagle Fish Hatchery with typical hatchery duties (fish culture, data entry, and equipment maintenance).
Dates
Positions will be filled from late March to late-June (not to exceed 680 hours), followed by a 30 day separation period, and from late-July to the end of November (not to exceed 680 hours). Employment will not exceed 1385 hours.
General Information
Incumbents will be required to travel to remote locations (including overnight stay, up to 3 or 4 nights) for fish tagging, trapping, or sampling. These positions may involve walking over rugged terrain and along stream banks, standing and working in cold water and lifting/carrying equipment up to 60 lbs. for short distances with or without reasonable accommodations.
Principal Accountabilities
Data Collection: Interviews anglers to obtain harvest data; collects fish by trawling; operates fish traps to collect juvenile and adult Sockeye Salmon, collects scale and tissue samples, checks for tags and fin clips, prepares biological specimens and records information; marks with PIT-tags or fin clips, records information from recovered tags, summarizes and reports on biological information collected and inputs/retrieves data using a personal computer.
Typical duties: operates power boats for collection of fish and biological data; operates and maintains fish tagging and marking equipment; maintains and repairs fish traps; inspects equipment to ensure proper working order and diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems. Tows boats and trailers to field locations.
