Position Summary
Position Overview:
This position will provide on-site and virtual career advising for students and recent alumni from all majors and exploratory students. Support the development and implementation of early-stage career education and engagement through programming, tabling, presentations, and resource development. Develop and support partnerships with career staff across campus and non-affiliated university departments and academic programs. Assist with supervision of the Career Peer student staff and develop advisor trainings and resources.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Provide career advising on-site and virtually to students and recent alumni (within 2 years of graduation), including all-majors career support and exploratory advising.
Develop and implement specialized career education programming, presentations, and resources, focused on early-stage career development and career exploration.
Administer and interpret career assessments in individual and group settings including the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, and Focus 2.Contribute to the assessment efforts of the Career Exploration Center using various strategies such as surveys of events and advising, focus groups, and development of learning outcomes.
Contribute to the supervision and development of the Career Peer staff through development of new career educational trainings, tools, and resources that support their advising capacity.
Support partnerships with non-college affiliated classes and university departments to facilitate partnered events, workshops, and career support.
Partner with career services colleagues across campus to deliver joint programming including a general workshop series and career exploration/exposure events.
Assist in supporting large Career Services Network events such as career fairs.
Prepare written communications and multi-media materials for digital media promoting early-stage and interest area career development activities.
Promote and represent the resources of the Career Services Network at large-scale University functions, such as admissions or orientation events.
Provide referrals to specific college career staff as students move from early-stage career development to more advanced areas.
Support the Career Exploration Center operations and engagement via coverage for walk-in advising, staffing coverage, and engagement events.
Serve on relevant internal and external groups/committees focused on career/student success.
Attend, present, and represent University and Career Services Network at professional conferences.
Communications/Interpersonal Relationships
Interacts with:
Students/Alumni – to advise on career skills, career development and career planning concerns, distribute information, make presentations, and evaluate career services.
Faculty/Staff/Administrators – to exchange information and coordinate career development activities and presentations.
Co-Workers – to collaborate in developing and implementing programs and resources.
Director/Leadership Team of Career Services – to receive guidance and direction for work activities, exchange information, and collaborate on department initiatives and activities.
Public – to respond to inquiries and promote awareness.
Responsibility for the Work of Others:
Advising and supervision support of Career Peer student staff.
Responsibility for Health/Safety of Others
No assigned responsibility.
Impact on Programs/Services/Operations
Inefficient processes and ineffective communications could result in dispensing inaccurate information to patrons needing career planning information. Inefficient and ineffective services and programs could negatively impact desired outcomes and damage the image of the Career Services Network.
Work Environment
Standard office environment.
All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a masters degree in education, counseling or related area; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in Human Resources and/or career counseling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of career development, job search techniques, and employer hiring practices at the university level; experience working with university students in a career advising role or other career-related setting; excellent customer service skills and attitude; willingness and ability to take initiative; desire and ability to build relationships with other units and offices at MSU; ability to function as a member of a team with a common goal of departmental success. Strong desire to work with university students on career and professional development.
