Michigan State University(MSU) Laboratory Technologist in East Lansing, Michigan
Position Summary
Process and test animal specimens for diagnostic purposes using molecular-based assays; organize and analyze data, enter and retrieve information from the Laboratory Information Management System; perform quality control procedures and maintain quality control records; store and dispose of specimens; operate and maintain scientific equipment; communicate with lab staff, veterinarians and clients to provide information and lab results; work with other lab personnel in an environment of problem-solving and process improvement. The position has responsibility for the safety and health of others and, therefore, involves strict attention to detail and protocol. Working hours are between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and may include occasional University holidays on a rotating basis.
70% Performs laboratory assays and procedures, including confirmatory and quality control testing, to produce results for the health maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment of animals. Identifies and solves technical problems related to this testing
10% Collects data and reviews paperwork and test results for completeness and accuracy. Enters data for completed testing in the laboratory information system.
5% Participates in laboratory problem-solving, policy making, and Standard Operating Procedure writing and revision. Attends staff meetings.
5% Assists with special projects, including method comparisons and new test development.
5% Maintains quality control records, identifies quality control variances, and resolves quality control issues. Operates, maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment to provide accurate performance of assays.
5% Other duties may include performing Foreign Animal Disease Testing which may include Biosafety Level 3 procedures, communicating with clients to provide test results, answering questions related to sample submission and test interpretation.

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a in a biological science field or related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in virology and high-volume diagnostic laboratory techniques.
Desired Qualifications
Molecular diagnostic testing experience in nucleic acid extraction and PCR-based procedures; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and demonstrate a high level of initiative; excellent time-management skills; experience in the use of laboratory information systems and the file management and manipulation of Excel and Word; excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong problem solving and customer service skills, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
