Position Summary
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Nuclear data work
- Evaluate experimental and theoretical nuclear data and combine them to create data products needed for astrophysical models
- Carry out theoretical analysis using R-matrix theory and statistical model calculations
- Update databases for nuclear data in astrophysics
- Maintain and develop further computational infrastructure for disseminating nuclear data for astrophysical implications
- Collaborate with NNDC evaluators at FRIB and elsewhere on relevant nuclear data needed for astrophysical reaction rate evaluations
- Research
- Develop an experimental or theoretical research program in nuclear astrophysics that either uses or generates nuclear data of the type being evaluated
- Community interaction
- Collaborate with other nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics data evaluation efforts at FRIB and in the community
- Interact with the broader nuclear astrophysics community through active participation in CeNAM and IReNA activities
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the nuclear astrophysics data evaluation process and the calculation of astrophysical reaction rates
- Skilled with the determination of astrophysical nuclear reaction rates using experimental and theoretical nuclear data
- Ability to conduct theoretical analysis and calculations of nuclear reaction rates using statistical models or R-matrix theory
- Skilled with computer programming relevant to nuclear data analysis or data dissemination
- Ability to carry out independent nuclear science research
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, to peers and the scientific community

Required Degree
Doctorate -Nuclear Physics
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in Nuclear Physics, Nuclear & Radiochemistry, Nuclear Astrophysics, or related fields
- Demonstrated ability to carry out productive research in experimental or theoretical nuclear physics broadly related to the types of data needed for astrophysical reaction rates
- Experience with the determination of astrophysical nuclear reaction rates using experimental and theoretical nuclear data
- Significant experience with computer programming relevant for nuclear data analysis or data dissemination
Desired Qualifications
- Experience and understanding the nuclear astrophysics data evaluation process and the calculation of astrophysical reaction rates
- Experience with theoretical analysis and calculations of nuclear reaction rates for astrophysical purposes, for example with statistical models or R-matrix theory
- Experience with experimental nuclear physics techniques
- Demonstrated interest in nuclear astrophysics
