Position Description:

Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves developing safety policies and procedures; participating in the safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas and activities for hazards; and investigating accidents. May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Assists in management for daily activities for all safety programs and administration of institutional Safety Services policies and procedures; fire safety, laboratory safety, environmental safety, education/ training and occupational safety. Performs safety audits, surveys and inspections as mandated by each regulation Duties may require driving of a company vehicle. Assists with inspections and audits based on SOP; provides support to manager in daily activities. Records inspection results, inspects according with directions and guidance from Supervisor and Standard provided. Performs tasks and duties responsibility and in a safe manner, taking care to prevent exposure of self and others to hazards. Aware of work environment and associated hazards; works competently and safely/ does not minimize responsibilities in discharge of duties

  • Management and oversight of the hazardous chemical inventory and hazard analysis for the institution, including the research labs. Ensures that the chemical inventory database matches the actual onsite inventories in to order to minimize the risk of unknown hazards being present in the labs or other areas of the campus. Ensures that all chemicals are labeled and stored according to standard.

  • Performs accident investigation, including near misses, and assists in the reporting process computer, PDA Weekly of the Institution. Reports clearly identify trends and highlight areas of needed emphasis and training.

  • Develops and conducts safety training presentations to different groups within the Institution. May be required to perform training presentation to groups at different levels of understanding.

  • Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures and processes.

  • Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSCEP’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Actively promote and encourage staff across the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education or previous experience in safety or environmental position

  • Professional safety and environmental certifications are preferred

  • Ability to prioritize, plan and restructure daily activities as needed

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Hazardous materials knowledge, to include; the nature of chemical, biological hazards; proper storage and handling; separation of incompatible materials; use of personal protective equipment; management of chemical inventories, etc. as demonstrated by HAZWOPER or Hazardous Materials Technician training.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of college level work in Occupation Health and Safety with course work in assigned area.

  • Four years of job related experience.

  • Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to occupational safety.

  • General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks.

  • Ability to assist in the execution of a program of campus safety.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
