Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Under the general supervision of the Site Development and Inspections Division (SDID) Administrative Assistant IV, provides administrative support by managing document intake, processing and final disposition of land development related documents and applications from customers and internal staff. Process and QC internal and external correspondence. Schedules and coordinates meetings. Organizes, scans, files, retrieves and archives records associated with site development and inspections. Researches and obtains site-related plans, documents, and inspection records through stored files, online databases and record management systems to assist customers and internal staff. Responds to internal and external customer inquiries, including those related to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Receives, researches, and processes complaints from external customers. Complies with county, agency, and job specific training, including but not limited to Emergency Management and Safety related courses. Complies with LDS’s safety programs and guidelines.

Note: The assigned functional areas for this position include general administrative assistance and/or office management.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two years of experience of providing administrative support to technical staff duties to include: proofreading technical reports, file management and process improvement to increase efficiencies.

  • At least two years providing front-line customer service responding to customer inquiries face-to-face, by telephone, and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to bend, squat, and twist upper body to maneuver in workstation; and the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to move tables and chairs. Ability to stand, stoop and bend from up to an hour and to lift moderately heavy objects such as boxes of files or large construction plan sets. Visual acuity to read data on computer monitor. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
