Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Steel Jackson is seeking a leader for the position of Environmental Manager. The position is responsible for taking care of our team and customers as a member of the Nucor Steel Jackson leadership team to continually improve our safety, environmental efforts, quality and long-term profitability. The position is also responsible for the growth and development of the safety, environmental and quality teams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and participating in a wide variety of activities related to (but not limited to):

  • All aspects of Safety for the division and team

  • Environmental compliance, permitting , regulation and Quality systems for Nucor Steel Jackson & General Recycling

  • Public relations/outreach on environmental issues

  • Working closely with Government Affairs team, Lobbyists and local officials

  • Environmental training and teammate development

  • Engagement with government regulators and non-government organizations

  • Participation in corporate environmental audit program

  • Division support services

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience in the steel industry or heavy manufacturing.

  • Bachelor's degree in an environmentally related field, physical science, engineering or equivalent.

Detailed Selection Criteria:

  • Safety - Its the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, red lines, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards always.

  • Technical Environmental Expertise: Demonstrates a mastery of complex environmental laws, regulations and operations in the areas of environmental permitting (air and water), operations, mechanical/electrical/environmental engineering principles, and reporting.

  • Communication Skills: The ability to give full attention to what others are saying and communicate complex concepts and information in a way that can effectively reach any audience. This includes demonstrated strong public speaking skills.

  • Leadership Presence and Courage: Excellent organizational leadership and follow-up skills; willingness and confidence to have immediate and direct conversations on critical alignment issues such as with initiating and supporting change; willing to face adversity and conflict head on with positive solutions.

  • Strategic Thinking Skills: Ability to identify and focus on long-term, enterprise -wide strategic issues. Considers the relative costs and benefits of potential actions and understands how moves made today impact the long-term future of the organization.

  • Political Communication and Outreach: Demonstrates the ability to communicate with politicians, regulators and policy makers to represent Nucor and get results. Understands the nuances of political situations and how best to navigate them.

  • Fosters Teamwork: Demonstrates a strong ability to contribute to the team and a collaborative work environment by encouraging and building mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members .

  • Develops Talent: Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of developing talent and the ability to identify the strengths and developmental needs of others to include coaching, mentoring, or teaching others to improve their skills, work effectively and advance towards further opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated proficiency in environmental permitting for all media (air, water, waste), environmental law, environmental auditing, and regulation assessment and overall operations.
