Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineer II position in the Division 9 Project Development unit. This position will serve as the Senior Assistant to the DDC Engineer in the production and review of roadway design plans, estimates, and the creation of contract documents. Duties include the drafting, design, and review of erosion control, hydraulic, signing, and pavement marking plans from inception through to final construction plans in accordance with NCDOT policy manuals, standards and specifications. This position is also responsible for coordinating the field surveys and overseeing the survey crew. This position is responsible for scheduling assigned projects within the DDC unit and coordinating schedules with other units, governmental agencies, private engineering firms, public and private officials to ensure completion of plans according to the STIP or Division Let schedule. This position will assist with managing supervisory and administrative functions to support the drafting of roadway plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, practices, and theories used in the project development and construction engineering of bridges and roadways

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and review moderately complex engineering and technical plans and/or data for completeness, compatibility, compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes and design needs.

  • Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex projects.

  • Experience with interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others.

  • Experience supervising, motivating, counseling, training other engineers and technicians.

Additional Expectations:

Employee must have the ability to respond to the public, local government agencies, Raleigh-based staff and private engineering firms regarding the status and design aspects of highway projects within the Division. Applicant should have a working knowledge of transportation design in accordance with AASHTO guidelines and NCDOT policies and procedures. Applicant should possess a working knowledge of field surveying procedures and be proficient with robotic instruments, data collection and GPS. Applicant must be proficient with various computer applications including MS Office, Microstation, Geopak and have a familiarity with corridor modeling, along with the ability to budget time and coordinate schedules with others. Applicant should be able to transverse steep and uneven terrain. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
