U.S. Army Sustainment Command Conductor (Motor Vehicle Operator) in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

About the Position: This position is located with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, 407th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, Transportation Division, in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Responsibilities Coordinate and monitor the makeup, breakup, and movement of the train. Ensure all safety and movement regulations are followed. Perform maintenance of locomotive, rolling stock, and other railway supporting equipment in accordance with specifications and standards outlined in appropriate regulations. Check out equipment before operation and perform such maintenance as greasing, adding or changing oil, changing and cleaning filters, keeping cooling systems filled, changing or adjusting brake shoes and a variety of other routine repairs. Operate different sizes of diesel or gasoline fork-lifts, up to an "all-terrain" capable of lifting up to 50,000 pounds to transport, load, and unload materials. Serve as alternate Locomotive Engineer operating a 120-ton, 1200 horsepower Diesel Electric Locomotive on approximately 27 miles of track outside and within the installation. Operate and perform operator maintenance on a diesel-powered truck tractor with semi-trailer. Check to make sure cargo is secured to prevent shifting or falling while in transit and minimize the possibility of vehicle sway. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Conductor (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision to include 1) Monitoring and/or coordinating the safe makeup, breakup, and movement of trains or crews; 2) Planning the best sequence of arranging, picking up, and setting out cars; and 3) Operating and/or performing maintenance on vehicles. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Selective Placement Factor: The duties of this position require the possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. (Note: You must attach a copy of your valid license with your application package.) To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Physical Effort: Uses considerable physical agility and effort in pushing, pulling, lifting, positioning and turning various braking, switching, and coupling devices; moving and lifting arms and devises to give signals; walking over rails and ties and running to perform tasks; and climbing aboard locomotives and train cars, sometimes while they are moving or have slippery steps, rungs, and grab irons. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds or puts forth similar effort in pushing and removing obstacles from the railway. Involves intense concentration and observation to coordinate crew activities and insure safe overall train movement. Must be able to climb up and down steep steps or ladders to board and leave the train. Requires continuous manipulation of hand-operated controls while stretching, turning, and shifting position for best visibility. Subject to physical strain from swaying motions and jarring movements, particularly when coupling cars and running on rough track. Physical effort and strain are required to turn the fork-lift truck which is usually driven over rough terrain causing vibration. May exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines and winching equipment to secure cargo load. Physical effort is required in changing tires and wheels and may have to lift objects up to 40 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Other work could require standing or walking on hard surfaces, stooping, bending, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions: Frequently exposed to conditions such as: loud noises from operating train, train whistle, and horn; fumes and odors, such as those from diesel exhaust and creosote; possible injury from accidental slipping and falling while working and walking over ties, railways slopes, rails, and while boarding, walking upon, and getting off both standing and moving trains; possible injury from coupling and uncoupling devices and air brake hoses; and possible injury from motor vehicles or railway vehicles, and from train derailment or other accidents. Wears protective clothing, such as safety shoes and gloves. Follows numerous safety procedures and requirements to offset some adverse conditions and avoid accidents or injury. Works in a cab which is often hot or cold. Sometimes exposed to bad weather, particularly when operating with an open cab window. Exposed to unpleasant fuel exhaust fumes and to jarring, jolting, and swaying movements. The locomotive engineer is continuously exposed to loud noise from engine operation, train whistle, and horn. Exposed to possible injuries from accidents. Works inside in areas that are sometimes damp and drafty but usually outside in all kinds of weather and is exposed to dust and dirt. Cuts, bruises, and broken bones may result from shifting loads, toppling stacks, fork-lift truck's overturning, falling objects, or accidents with other moving equipment. Works mostly outside and operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation and on public roads. Exposed to dirt and fumes, subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones or serious injury as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
