Lee County Government BOCC Heavy Equipment Operator - Landscape in Fort Myers, Florida

This role involves operating large vehicles and public works equipment to maintain landscaping along Lee Countys canals and roadways within the Department of Transportation Operations Division.

Candidates may also need to demonstrate their skills and abilities in equipment operation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintaining the Landscaping of County rights-of-ways.
  • Duties may include but are not limited to operation of construction and landscape maintenance equipment including tractors, wood chippers, various size chainsaws, frond trucks, large arrow/message board truck, edgers, hedgers, string trimmers, and all similar trucks, equipment, and other hand tools.
  • Performs tree trimming, and litter and debris clean up.
  • Operation of equipment includes any equipment listed in a lower operator grade.
  • May operate Grapple Truck, Skid Steer and Mini Excavator.
  • May include irrigation maintenance and repair activities.
Education, Experience, Licensing
  • Requires any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED and one year of experience in the operation of construction or related vehicular equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with air brakes endorsement and an acceptable driving record is required.
  • This is a Safety-Sensitive position subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing as provided in DOT regulation 49 CFR-Parts 40 and/or 382.

  • Operating Characteristics of Landscaping Equipment: Knowledge of how to operate various landscaping tools and machinery effectively.
  • Pesticide Application: Familiarity with applying pesticides, including herbicides and insecticides.
  • Safe Driving Techniques: Understanding safe driving practices when using motorized equipment.
  • Occupational Hazards: Awareness of potential risks associated with operating landscaping machinery.
  • Irrigation Maintenance and Repair: Knowledge of maintaining and repairing irrigation systems.
  • Physical Strength: Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Extreme Weather Conditions: Capability to work in extreme heat and other weather conditions.
  • Malfunction Detection: Skill in identifying malfunctions while operating equipment.
  • Minor Adjustments and Servicing: Ability to make minor adjustments and perform basic servicing on assigned automotive equipment and components.
  • Work Zone Setup: Skill in setting up a safe work zone.
  • Tree and Vegetation Trimming: Proficiency in trimming trees and vegetation.
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
