About you and this role:

Dowhas an exciting opportunity for a Gas Phase PolyethyleneSenior Production Engineerlocated inFort Saskatchewan (AB, CAN). This role will support the new LP8 plant in Dow’s Alberta Operation’s as part of the Path2Zero Project. The Path2Zero (P2Z) program will create the first net-zero emissions site of its kind in the world. The Fort Saskatchewan P2Z program is a key enabler to Dow’s Decarbonization strategy. This individual will support the commissioning and start-up of the LP-8 plant, using their experience and knowledge to help train operations and develop effective CSU and Operations Disciplines. When the plant has started up, they would transition to be a core member of the operations team supporting the daily operation of the plant and partnering with others to work through planned outages and unplanned events to enable the safe, compliant and reliable operation of their assigned areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Work to develop plant’s commissioning and start-up (CSU) and operating disciple (OD) during the construction and commissioning phase of the project.

  • Leverage process understanding and expertise to help train and develop operations staff.

  • Participate in commissioning and start-up of facility, executing procedures for commissioning and start up and providing troubleshooting and support as challenges arise.

  • Develop and demonstrate strong knowledge of Dow’s Life Critical Standards (LCSs) and employ common sense in their implementation.

  • Complete prescribed EH&S Training and Skills demonstrations commensurate with delegated authority from Facility Work Group Leader.

  • Works closely with operations team leveraging their problem-solving skills and technical expertise.

  • Ensures Most Effective Technology (MET) is understood and that appropriate tools and automation are used to optimize plant performance.

  • Utilizes defined MET and challenges / escalates MET application and assumptions when better solutions arise.

  • Partners with experts to perform advanced troubleshooting and improve operating discipline.

  • Diagnose and document root causes of unplanned events in the facility.

  • Maintain strong field presence to reinforce EH&S principles and provide operational support.

  • Conduct review of logbook and alarm history daily to better understand the plant operation and stay engaged with daily activities.

  • Maintains, owns and reviews Key Process Indicators (KPIs) and trends to ensure optimum performance.

  • Responds urgently to plant issues and emergencies.

  • Act as technical expert during unplanned events and drives implementation of effective corrective and preventative actions.

  • Provides leadership, expertise, diagnosis and optimization in plant’s operating efficiency including raw material efficiency, offgrade and waste generation.

  • Ensure compliance with plant operating permits. Understand site integration and provides input to optimize the overall system.

  • Facilitate conversations to best manage the utility services to the plant partners and tenants.

  • Be prepared to advise plant partners and site functions on how to best manage and mitigate site unplanned events, response to significant weather events and participate in strategic planning as appropriate.

  • Contribute to building a sustainable, resilient culture of high-performance in the Operations team.

  • Essential functions of this position may require, among other things, that the employee use particular types of equipment -- such as on-site safety equipment that has specific weight limitations whereby the individual’s own weight, plus the weight of tools and other items and materials, must not exceed a certain threshold. (For example, some types of safety equipment may be rated for a maximum weight limit of 300 pounds total.) Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree in Engineering is required.

  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

  • Registration or the ability to be registered with APEGA (EIT/P. Eng)

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to accommodate meetings with team members in different locations / time zones.

  • Must be willing and able to meet physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Must be willing and able to meet all applicable requirements related to business travel (e.g., as to immigration and visa rules, public-health mandates, airline rules, etc.) into and out of (and physical presence in) various countries worldwide.

  • A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in Dow Gas Phase Polyethylene manufacturing.

  • Certifications as Panel/Board operator in Operations.

  • Strong demonstrated technical, interpersonal, and teamwork skills

  • Experience with ABB Control Systems.

  • Familiarization with LOPA and Safety Instrumented Systems.

  • Experience developing operating discipline and training materials.

  • Professional Engineer Designation, Engineer in Training Designation or ability to apply for it.

  • Experience in manufacturing in cold climate location.

  • Polyethylene plant turnaround experience.

  • Polyethylene plant start-up / shutdown experience.
