CITY OF GRAND ISLAND Materials Handler in GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska
Description
Participate in semi-skilled and skilled work involved in handling coal fuel and combustion products for the Platte Generating Station; maintain and operate equipment involved in handling coal fuel and combustion products; and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry/journey level class within the materials handler series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Senior Materials Handler by eventual performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees initially work under immediate supervision but very quickly learn the full scope of the job and only need instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
Essential Functions
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external contacts.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
Participate in the maintenance of grounds and facilities; clean equipment and buildings as necessary; remove snow, mow lawn, spray for weeds and other miscellaneous tasks.
Assist with the filling of coal bunkers; assist in unloading and handling coal trains and fuel oil trucks.
Assist with the handling of coal combustion products.
Assist in maintaining equipment used in materials handling operation; assist with the lubrication, maintenance and oil changes for heavy equipment including the locomotive and coal pushers; perform preventive maintenance work on vehicles and equipment; operate equipment as necessary.
Assist in repairing and maintaining material handling equipment as necessary.
Participate in work activities including unloading the coal train, operate the control panel for transportation of coal; maintain clear coal chutes. Operate the bottom ash dewatering and unloading system. Operate heavy equipment including, but not limited to the following:
- Locomotive
- Wheel loader
- Tractor Trailer
- Motor Grader
- Skid Steer
- Dozer
The above heavy equipment is to be operated solely on the Platte Generating Station property.
Design and fabricate various pieces of equipment for use in coal handling operation.
Inspect and maintain railroad tracks and switches; service and maintain run-off pond pump; operate coal sampling system; service conveyor belts.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Safe work practices appropriate to work assignments.
Systems involved in the transportation of coal.
Operational aspects of a locomotive.
Ability to:
Work overtime as required. Position requires weekend rotation to refill plant coal bunkers and unload trains.
Work under harsh weather conditions.
Work under air contamination.
Lift, push and pull heavy objects requiring strength and physical stamina.
Drive various vehicles and equipment used in handling materials for the Utilities Department.
Work in both outdoor and indoor environmental conditions, with exposure to heat/cold, fumes, dust, noise, water, oil and grease.
Work in confined spaces, and with moving mechanical parts.
Work at high elevations.
Must have use of arms and legs.
Must be able to operate computer terminal and applicable programs.
Properly wear all safety equipment.
Must be able to see and read gauges, trouble lights and control panel screens.
Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
No experience is required. Experience in operating eavy machinery and equipment is desirable.
Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
License or Certification:
Employee must possess a valid drivers license and maintain insurability as determined by the Citys insurance carrier.

Salary:
Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry-level qualifications.
Working Hours:
Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; may vary depending on department needs.
Residency:
All Production Division Personnel must live within a 30-minute driving distance of 1035 W. Wildwood Dr, Grand Island, Nebraska. The shortest route available on Google maps will be used to determine commute time.
