City of Grand Rapids Engineering Assistant I in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Nature of Work This is a responsible technical support work performing a variety of engineering support tasks. Work is performed under the continuing supervision of an engineer, surveyor, or other supervisor. The employee may serve as a lead worker over a crew and may be expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. 

 SPECIFIC TO WATER: Assists with Lead Service Line Replacement projects including obtaining agreements from customers and coordinating work with contractors. Meets with contractors, property owners and others to resolve complaints and problems. Maintains and shares records pertaining to utility and other public facilities and projects. Verifies field locations of utilities using as-built data and other tools. Investigates utilities and infrastructure for size, materials, and condition. Reports those findings to supervisory staff and others.  Researches records to determine property ownership and obtain other relevant information; Conducts research of engineering plans showing underground utilities and other city facilities and provides information to contractors, consultants, property owners and others Provides maps, plans, drawings and sketches to contractors, engineers, consultants and co-workers. Performs related work as required.

SPECIFIC TO STORMWATER: The primary responsibility for this role will be to act as a soil erosion construction inspector to ensure both private development sites and municipal construction projects are in compliance with State of Michigan and City of Grand Rapids soil erosion and sedimentation control policies. Primary job task will be the following: Inspects construction sites for soil erosion and sedimentation control compliance; ensures all external elements are in place in accordance with the approved plans Inspects demolition sites for grade, proper fill, debris, and collateral damage to sidewalks, drive approaches, curbs and roads Investigates and enforces complaints about liquid and solid environmental pollutants and infractions caused by them Issues Notice of Violation Fees for improper site conditions  Attend local environmental outings and activities and talk the importance of environmental stewardship

High School diploma. --AND-- At least two (2) years of experience in surveying, drafting, construction inspection, or related work --OR-- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Required Qualifications: Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license or possession of a current valid license from another state and the ability to obtain a Michigan driver's license within 90 days of employment. Required Qualifications Specific to Stormwater: MDEQ Storm Water Construction Site certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications: Materials Testing Certification is desirable.
