Harbor Maintenance Technician Full Time

Position Overview

The Harbor Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing facilities, infrastructure, and equipment at the Marina. This position involves performing preventive maintenance, addressing repairs, ensuring the cleanliness and safety of docks, and assisting in operations as needed. This position answers directly to the Assistant Harbor Master position, however this technician works closely with the Harbor Master, and other staff to ensure the smooth operation of the facility and an exceptional experience for marina users.

Essential Job Functions

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the American with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties maybe assigned.

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on docks, walkways, boat slips, piers, bulkheads, and other harbor/marina infrastructure.

• Inspect and repair minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems related to the marina or harbor.

• Repair and maintain minor equipment such as pumps, generators, electrical panels, and marina-related machinery.

• Perform minor carpentry, painting, welding, and masonry tasks as needed.

• Maintain and repair fueling stations, ensuring proper operation and compliance with safety standards.

• Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of docks, piers, walkways, and surrounding areas.

• Collect and dispose of trash and debris in marina and harbor areas.

• Pressure wash docks, piers, and facilities to maintain clean and safe surfaces.

• Keep marina signage, lighting, and safety equipment in good condition.

• Ensure restrooms, showers, and other public areas are clean and operational.

• Conduct regular safety inspections of docks, piers, walkways, and other marina facilities.

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to environmental and safety standards.

• Report any unsafe conditions, hazards, or accidents to marina management.

• Assist in emergency situations, such as hurricanes, tropical storms, oil/gas spills, boat fires, or medical emergencies, and coordinate with local authorities when necessary.

• Assist boaters with docking and undocking as needed.

• Provide information to marina users regarding services, rules, and regulations.

• Address customer concerns or complaints in a timely and professional manner.

• Assist with fueling operations and ensure compliance with environmental and safety guidelines.

• Maintain accurate logs of maintenance tasks, inspections, and repairs using the automated ticketing system for maintenance.

• Document and report incidents, equipment failures, or major repairs to marina management.

• Keep inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment, and notify management of items that need to be reordered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems preferred.

• Prior experience in facility maintenance, preferably in a marina, harbor, or related environment.

• Strong understanding of basic electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

• Ability to perform minor carpentry, painting, and general repairs.

• Familiarity with boating and marina operations is a plus.

• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently.

• Ability to swim and operate small boats or marina equipment is preferred.

• Excellent communication and customer service skills.

• Physical ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects.

Education and Experience

Minimum of a High school diploma or equivalent with 5 years of technical experience in electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems or general maintenance required.

Required Licenses or Certificates

Must possess a valid Mississippi driver's license.

Positions in this class require lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds, climbing, jumping and balancing when securing lines to boats or when towing boats, transferring equipment such as pumps between boats, stooping, kneeling and crouching, handling boat controls, reaching to tie lines on boats and using the senses of hearing and touching when evaluating engine problems. Work is primarily outside in extreme weather conditions in all seasons including hot, cold, wet, freezing, windy, or extremely sunny.
